If you buy shares on the stock market and do so with the intention of receiving a certificate for the purchase then you should be aware that it not produced by the stockbroker who is in the same position as the purchaser - awaiting delivery from the registrar after the transfer relating to the purchase has been registered.

If the purchase relates to a company registered ...

The transfer goes through many stages before a certificate is produced and although as a shareholder you have the right to expect quick delivery, it is not always possible.

Portfolio onlines a joke

Advantages: cheep
Disadvantages: not willing to help customers if they have problems

...years and have always used Barclays paper shares system with only a few minor problems. on the 19/08/00 I applied to have my portfolio on line with Barclay. I sent all my certs off & signed all the forms.after a few weeks about half my shares were online but some were not I phoned there help desk and was told that because it was an irish company it would take 2 weeks longer. I waited 2 weeks & phoned again and was told the same thing that it would ...

Barclays Online Stockbrokers and New PC's

Advantages: Ease to Use , Cheap , Cash timing advantage
Disadvantages: Potential security issue , Only 3 trades in 5 Minutes

...with the Share certificates with Barclays and they offer an exceptionally easy service and you do not have to pay any money out for at least two weeks. The problem I have come across is if you buy a new PC , you actually need to take a copy of your digital certificate which Barclays use to verify you are who you say you are.If you have not like I did you need to re-register and they cancel your old account.Obviously if you sold your PC and did action ...

Quick review of Barclays Stockbrokers

As a Barclays stocbroker customer of 8 years duration I have noticed customer service quality has plummeted and have recently moved my accounts elsewhere. The Service center has become almost customer hostile, non-responsive, intransigent and bureaucratic. If you fail to respond to a particular notice or requirement for some signature or paper work in a limited time eg because you are on holiday or travelling, woe betide you since you are likely to find your accounts frozen and non-tradeable. Go elsewhere! ...

Marconi PEP

Advantages: Well known name
Disadvantages: Very, very expensive

Barclays stockbrokers administer the Marconi (formerly GEC) PEP. The 2003 admin charges have increased 50% (after previous increases) and additionally there are charges for closure @ £25 and Crest charges of £15 plus pro-rata admin fees, all plus VAT. In my case the closure fees amount to more than the value of the stock! I tried to obtain details of my portfolio on line but my registration was repeatedly rejected and then I was told I was not ...
...also have accounts, Barclays comes at the bottom of the list. One further irritation, the only telephone number available is an 0845 number. This actually costs me more as I am a fixed monthly tarrif with my phone company - other than premium numbers which are charged extra. Not customer friendly. ...

Are they worth it?Internet trading at Barclays

Advantages: 2 weeks credit, low maximum charge, get a quote prior to buy/sell.
Disadvantages: need day time internet access, fairly slow to load from internet, no portfolio capability

I joined Barclays Stockbrokers recently as I wanted to deal in shares on line. The service at sign up was'nt that good, I had major problems with setting up my password. I wanted to use on that I already have for other accounts but they were'nt to happy. Managed to solve that problem. Being able to buy shares on credit (14days) seemed good but the downside is that you also have to wait 2 weeks to get your money when the shares are sold. There is ...
...your shares and spare cash to fund deals. You can't deal out of business hours and you can't enter limit orders. Overall they are not bad for someone wanting to invest for the medium to long term, a definite no no for the short term day trader. Costs range from £14.50 (minimum)to £39.99 (maximum) at 1%. ...

Barclays Stockbrokers

Advantages: Fast purchase of shares
Disadvantages: None so far

Barclays Stockbrokers are one of the leading stockbrokers in the UK. Throught their web page you can register fast as a new customer or by dailing their customer service number. They have a reasonable fee when you purchase stock from them. Barclays is a big organasation that you can't go wrong. I have been dealing with Barclays stockbrokers for over 3 years and I have never had any problems. I would recommend on opening an account with Barclays Stockbrokers for dealing with any shares that exists on the market. Also many people that I know have switched to Barclays stockbrokers for better reliability of service that they provide. Check out their well designed web site and judge yourself about their quality of service that they provide. ...

Don' use Barclays Stockbrokers

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: don't send account balance when you close a/c

I closed my MarketMaster account on 19 July 2004. Despite repeated requests for the account balance to be transferred to my bank account Barclays have failed to do so and cannot even say when they will. Even when I send them a recorded delivery letter and I phoned to check they received it, their reply was "well, ask the post office - they'll tell you whether we've received it"!!!!!!!! And you want to make a complaint? Oh, there's no complaints department at Barclays Stockbrokers. Complaints procedure? "Oh, I'll treat this as a complaint then" - well, thanks alot, and what next? You ask to speak to a manager - none of them available. Do they ever phone you? Two phone calls from them versus at least 15 from me to them. I still don' know when I can expect to receive the funds. Interest, for the time they've had my money? No ...

Sharing My Laddered Stockings!

Advantages: Pauline and her Barclayettes!
Disadvantages: Dividends can't buy me love!

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN May 2001 At school I received very little education about personal finance. A few maths lessons covered the calculation of simple and compound interest from the principal or lump sum and APR etc. This really did not stand me in good stead to cope with finances in adult life. During the mid 1980s I mainly put money in safe building society deposit accounts. A few family friends dealt in shares. But I could not get my head around the volatility of shares. In 1996 a library book entitled 'The Which Guide to Investing' really enthralled me. I learned about the mechanics of stocks and shares. SHARE DEALING I then decided to dabble in shares. The only stockbroker accessible to amateur investors in those days was Barclays Stockbrokers. The registration process was quite simple. The application form required ...
