The book opens telling us about one of the incidents for which he was awarded the VC, then flicks back in time to his childhood in Grenada, though at first you dont know this. The imaginings of a chidl who loves cars and pretends ... ...of his childhood and family situation gives you an overall feel that this boy had a hard childhood, yet he didnt seem to realise this at the time, constantly looking on the brightside and giving himself something to aim for. He didnt like school and rather than just skiving off and doing nothing he taught himself skills which would allow him to claim a trade.

I had this book bought me for Christmas. I’ve always loved a book based on the army with a bit of action it and I think this is just what this book is about as well as some creative parts.

The book begins with Johnson Beharry in a Iraq as a driver for a Warrior tank and personnel carrier in which comes into a number of battle situations such as when a man with an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) attempts to ... ...to move he looks down the turret of the RPG and sees it the rocket hurtling towards his vehicle. It hits! Instead of killing anyone all Beharry hears it ping off the armour because it was a dud. Beharry has a lot of close encounters and close calls even at the start of the book. The book starts off with such excitement at the beginning allowing for the reader’s attention to be caught almost instantly for at least the first thirty to forty pages.
