the modern military thriller and turns them vehemently on their heads. Confronted with a massacre of Palestinian civilians by the sorely provoked Israeli troops he is advising (but who will not listen to him) SAS commander Ray Kerman rediscovers his long-lost Islamic roots, turns on his own men and defects, for good. What follows is a disaster--not for the world of Islamic fundamentalism into which he slips as neatly as a shark into a welcoming ocean but for the West which trained him. Robinson proceeds to demonstrate how a properly trained commander trusted by the Iranian ayatollahs and their terrorist proxies could do damage so much more severe than 9/11 that it takes the breath away. This feels like the first of a sequence--Ray Kerman becomes Ravi Rashood, finds true love and works mischief while half a world away a CIA analyst puts the story together and plans some eventual come-uppance. This is an interesting thriller because Robinson has some real political agendas, however reactionary they may be, and because he has a certain sense of how things work. --Roz Kaveney

So basically that’s it, Barracuda 945, a very gripping book that keeps you interested all the way through. Think I read it in about 2 weeks, while I was on holiday. As I’ve said before if you like Clancy, Ryan or McNab then this is one for you to check out.

Ok so Ciao are adding products in a bizarre order and this certainly wasn’t something I expected to be writing this soon, but never mind. In our house there is a little bit of a debate going on about authors, basically it started because I buy loads of books then pass them onto either my Mum or Dad to read afterwards. Basically Clancy is my Dad’s favourite and for ages I’ve been telling him there’s much better out there, in-case you haven’t guessed I’m not keen on Clancy books.
This is one of those authors, Patrick Robinson, anyone who has read my Seawolf review will know how I discovered Robinson and how much I enjoyed his first book. Well me being me I’ve now ended up reading his latest book next and then intend on going back afterwards to read the others, I’m in the middle of Shark Mutiny at the moment. However as it has turned out this is probably one of the best books I have read to date by any author.
Major Ray Kerman has been a star of the SAS rising through the ranks rapidly to his current position. A former Saudi citizen his parents moved to London when he was very young, but his mother made sure he kept in touch with his Islamic routes. Now many years later he has been posted to Israel to help the Israeli army in the war against Palestine. . However following a raid on a Palestine gun factory, he finds himself inside a building, which had been blown to pieces. He finds a woman and her two kids in the basement of the building and feels a stirring like some sort of connection with them. Joined by 2 SAS colleagues in the house mayhem ensues and the two kids are shot by the two SAS soldiers who in turn are then killed by Mayor Kerman. He suddenly realises that he has been on the wrong side all along and defects to the terrorist organisation HAMAS.
Of course the missing Major is a huge story, with Washington taking a big interest in the story and young Jimmy Ramshawe keeping an eye on events and for anything out of the ordinary happening. Almost two years later HAMAS terrorists start performing raids on banks and prisons, in a well organized, disciplined manor. Now under the leadership of General Ravi Rashood the terrorists have become a well organised fighting machine, almost like a special forces unit.
The main plan is a big hit against the US but for no one to know who is doing it, and General joins up with the Iranian Navy to hatch a scheme against the Americans to drive them out of the Middle East. Eventually they decided on a course of action (I won’t say what hat is) and so go about the task of buying 2 Nuclear Submarines from Russia through the Chinese. They acquire the first one Barracuda 945 and set about completing their task. I’ll leave it there as that has only scratched the surface of the deep plot within the book.
If you’ve read any of Patrick Robinson’s other books you will be familiar with the majority of characters in these books. If you haven’t let me give you a quick run down. Admiral Morgan is probably the best character in the book, he is the National Security Advisor but seems to have more clout than the President himself. Then you have George Morris, a member of the team in intelligence in Maryland he knows exactly how to deal with the admiral.
Under them you have Lt Jimmy Ramshawe the main assistant to George Morris, he seems to have an uncanny knack of taking two apparently unrelated events and make them into on global crisis. Obviously this book also brings Major Ray Kerman or Ravi Rashood as he later becomes known, into the list of characters. He is a brilliant strategist, who has become an advisor for the Iranian Navy and one of the main terrorist threats against the US.
This is another gripping book, once you get past that first paragraph you will be hooked on it. Robinson’s style is different to other writers in these categories, he does explain items like weapons but uses simple terms that everyone can understand easily. He writes in a way that draws you into the pages and leaves you wanting more. He touches very much on sensitive subjects in this book, but does it in away that really can’t be viewed in a bad way from any side.
So basically that’s it, Barracuda 945, a very gripping book that keeps you interested all the way through. Think I read it in about 2 weeks, while I was on holiday. As I’ve said before if you like Clancy, Ryan or McNab then this is one for you to check out.
