At the moment, there is a bug going round our town, and luckily, as of yet I have not caught it. Having felt a little under the weather in the last couple of days, I have decided to stick to soup to try and help me feel a little better. I went down to Tesco and picked up a cup a soup broccoli and cauliflower flavour. Having had this once before, and remembering that I enjoyed it, I thought I would try it again and found that I have, so in detail, I am going to tell you about this soup.
The packaging
At this moment in time, I am looking straight at a 4 sachet packet of broccoli and cauliflower cup a soup. In the cup a soup range however, you can get serving jars with 12 serving's worth within the jar. In the last year or so, the package design has changed and has become more modern and funky in my opinion. On the front in funky writing it the cup a soup title, with the flavour of the soups underneath it. This has cauliflower and broccoli all around the background of it. There is also a mug with a picture of what the soup looks like when it has been made up. The picture on the front does actually look like the soup when it is made up.
On the back of the box, there are the instructions of how to make the cup a soup, the other ranges, the nutritional information, the ingredients and other information such as the address of the manufacturer.
On the sides of the box, it tells me that it is low in fat and low in sugar which means to have it as a quick snack, or a meal with a little bread is perfect. On top of the box is the best before date and I am pleased to see that this box will last me until November 2007, which is brilliant seeing as I don't usually eat soup all that often.
The preparation and how to 'cook'
1) Open the sachet and pour into a medium mug or cup. 2) make sure there is enough water in the kettle and switch onto boil the water 3) When the water has boiled, pour into the cup or mug and stir with a spoon. 4) Leave to cool a little and eat or drink.
The look of the soup when it has been prepared is certainly thick, and the more water you add, the less thick the soup becomes, just like gravy I suppose. This soup is a faint yellow- green in colour with little green broccoli pieces floating around. Looks pretty delicious if I may say so.
Taste
Well here comes the taste test, and did it really live up to my expectations? The answer is yes.
I find that with soup, you always need an accompiment, so having a couple of slices of bread with it always tastes delicious. Just a word of warning, made by a hot boiling kettle, with the water, the soup will be hot so don't eat straight away, and leave to cool for a little while. Or at least blow on it beforehand rather than burning your tongue.
This can be eaten by having bread dipped into it, so I recommend you to use nice bread, maybe fresh from the oven or from Tesco bakery is best, or to just drink it straight from the mug. I have done both, I started off eating the soup with bread, which tasted delicious and certainly adds a flavour to the bread, and then I began to drink it. Drinking it is easy, and it's like a cup of tea. Just make sure that the soup is cool enough first, and then drink away. Entering my mouth, I am left with a broccoli flavour and a creamy sort of after taste which tastes perfect. The soup is thick when in my mouth, defiantly not watery and tastes wonderful. This is certainly a healthy option as my lunch on Monday lunchtime. Taking another sip, this time I can taste the little broccoli pieces within my mouth and this really tastes good. I am thoroughly enjoying this lunch. This time, I can taste a creamy substance before I swallow it and it tastes delicious still. Once again I am left with a creamy after taste in my mouth. I think at around 30p per a sachet of cup of soup, I think this tastes perfect for the price I paid and I am definitely buying these again in future.
Conclusion
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed eating and drinking this quick fix meal. It takes under five minutes to prepare; it's low in calories, low in fat and low in sugar. This fills me up quite a bit with a slice of bread, and it tastes great. The price is fantastic for a quick meal, and overall, I really do enjoy this soup. This will definitely be in my trolley more often. If you don't like a flavour as much, then you can always store it in the back of your cupboard in case someone else wants it when coming round your house because these soups last a long time. Overall, a ten out of ten for being such a great hug in a mug…..well maybe soup in a mug then.

Availability and price: all good supermarkets at around 80p-£1 for a 4 sachet packet, and brilliant on BOGOF offers, or in a 12 serving jar for around £2. I always find it better to buy these sorts of things in bulk because they last so long.
Advantages: nice comfort food Disadvantages: not very nutritious
...get a HUG from a Batchelors mug ! ,Or so they say, I’ve never had one from mine, but I do love these soups, though I suspect they are not really VERY nutritional, but they are tasty, and a bit of a comfort food.
Packet soups can not really rival their ‘tinned’ relatives, or of course dare I say it, fresh soup, yes, there is such a thing. I’m looking at an empty box of Batchelors creamy Broccoli and Cauliflower, and these ... ...of our poor relations the Batchelors cup a soup.( Nastiness in a packet)
If you want to go up market, yes there’s a fancier version even than the ‘cream of’ versions, you can have creamy soup with wait for it, no don’t laugh.... ha ha ...CROUTONS...yipeee. Cor blimey that’s a bit POSH isn’t it?...ooohh, get me, I’m having CROUTONS in mine,..coooerrr. CROUTONS, in a packet soup whatever will they think of ...

Advantages: Easy, quick, convenient Disadvantages: Salty, erzatz in flavour, very un-Minestrone like
There's nothing quite like a good Minestrone soup, is there? So chunky, it's nearly a stew, full of succulent vegetables, lots of tomato goodness, and small soup pasta, with maybe a sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese over the top, this is a soup that is truly a warming and filling meal. Sadly, Batchelor's Cup-a-Soup is nothing like a good Minestrone soup. Taste is sacrificed on the altar of convenience. Cup-a-Soup typically comes in a box containing ... ...it might be the side), you can also buy a big tub of this stuff - I can't imagine wanting to. Opening a sachet reveals rust red powder with tiny, freeze dried vegetables (the most recognisable of which being carrot), bitsy little croutons and equally tiny round 'pasta' (I use the word in its loosest sense) rings. There is an artificial tomato-y smell immediately apparent upon emptying the packet into your mug. The instructions on the box are straightforward ...

Advantages: Low in fat and calories Disadvantages: They taste like the residue in between a tramps toes
...remain are vitamins, beverages and Batchelors slim and cup-a-soups.
What am I doing one wonders? Well what ever it is, it seems to working, I have lost a whole stone in just 5 days on this starvation thingy and as this chuffs me right up, I aint about to quit while I’m in full flow.
Anyway, enough bragging, here are my findings on these rather unpleasant soups.
~~~~~~PACKAGING~~~~~~
Seeing as I am looking at a ‘Mediterranean tomato’ ... ...blue box with the red Batchelors logo at the top, next is a navy blue splodge encasing a dark blue cup containing some red slimy liquid that I would so often be tempted to describe as end of the month. It simply has to be the most painfully boring box I have ever seen but it boasts that it is 99% fat free and contains just 60 calories per cup, so who am I to criticise the design? After all, I’m only after something to take away the hunger pains ...
Advantages: Very quick and convenient. Disadvantages: Cheap and cheerful.
...from Tesco, Sainsburys, Co-op, Symingtons, Batchelors and Souped Up.
Let us discard the crud before we go further.
Don`t buy Co-op brand. Flavourless, insipid, weak, bland and cheap tasting. Yuk!
Give Souped Up a miss as well. They are only one grade better than the Co-op ones and similar descriptive words can be applied to them. Don`t even consider buying them.
That leaves us with Tescos, Sainsburys,Symingtons and Batchelors and all of these ... ...winner has to be the Batchelors range. A wide variety of flavours, all very good and tasty. They all appear to dissolve readily in the water to give a thick, smooth and aroma rich concoction. My particular favourite is the Cream of Mushroom with Croutons.
If you want a list of all the exotic ingredients (Acidity Regulators, Flavour Enhancers etc) I suggest you buy a packet and read the label .
They are all cheap and cheerful products, costing between ...
Advantages: Tastes lovely. Warms you up. Disadvantages: None
...my corner shop, I noticed Batchelors Cup a Soup - Minestrone flavour with croutons. I know some people aren't a lover of croutons in a soup, but personally, I quite like them.
I paid £1.20 for a box (99g in weight). There are 4 packets of this soup in the box, which works out at £0.30p per soup. It could work out cheaper buying it this way, that's if you don't mind soup in granule form.
The box is mainly dark blue in colour, with a hot mug of soup ... ...back of the box are the serving instructions, nutrition information, ingredients, and contact details. Each serving contains. 100 calories and 2.3g of fat (of which 1.2g are saturates). Ok, now onto the soup itself. As you open the box and pull out one of the packets, the packets are just plain white with a couple of green cups on the front. As you tear open the packet, and pour the contents of the soup into your mug, it's surprising how much there ...
The Product : BatchelorsCup a Soup extra,Chinese Chicken Noodle. 26g single pack.
First of lets talk about the price and packaging .I bought this online with my main tesco.com grocery shop . Priced at 0.30p I thought -can't go wrong. the pack is predomanantly blue it has a nice picture of a mug of said soup as you may expect from this type of product . On the front of the pack its states that the product contains 1 genourous serving. and also that there are NO artificial colours and no preservatives.
The back of the pack clearly points to the product being low in fat and low in sugar and also carries the well heard slogan 'A Great Big Hug in a Mug'.
the instructions are cleary shown as to how to prepare your cup a soup in order to eat in. Very straight forward.
1-empty sachet into a cup or mug(forgot to mention it comes in ...
Advantages: Cheap, quick and easy to make Disadvantages: Not as good as home made (obviously)
can cook food for our lunch so I quite often bring a tin of soup in and have that, not everyone is so lucky though. I would say most offices will have a kettle but not many provide their staff with a microwave .Whilst in my local Asda checking out the soups I noticed something that looked rather nice and something slightly different to the can of Heinz I was considering buying, this being BatchelorsCup a Soup Extra.
Now I'm sure that most of you have heard of BatchelorsCup a Soups, even if you have never tried one. These soups which have been around for a long time now (at least 15 years if not longer) were a new concept when they were launched onto the market back then. A soup that you make in a cup with just boiling water, no way! That's amazing! I remember them being launched and it seemed that back then they were very popular even ...
Advantages: Quick and easy to prepare Disadvantages: none!
Whatever the age this soup will appeal. It is creamy and thick. You can taste the texture of the potatoes and with little bite sized pieces of leek it makes for a very tasty snack!!
It is quick and easy to prepare. Just empty the sachet into a mug and carefully add 230mls of boiling water. Stir well then wait a couple of minutes and enjoy !
At 115 calories and 2.7g saturated fat per mug it is even kind to your waist.
It is available in packs of four sachets and is available from all leading supermarkets at a price of approx. 95p per box, so it is kind to the purse too!!
I would personally recommend this soup as one of the tastiest cup a soups ever tasted. Go ahead try it today !! ...
