action-strategy title Battlefield 1942 is a tense, involving game that wisely doesn't totally ignore the single player. Set in the midst of the Second World War, the action plays out as a satisfying hybrid of the tactical, slow build-up of Ghost Recon, mixed in with the more action-based Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Kicking off with an overall map of the area, each game requires some strategic planning before you get down to business, and with 35 vehicles on offer, as well as five classes of character to step into the shoes of, there's much to consider. To the developers' credit, it's quite an easy game to get to grips with, and it positively reeks of polish. The stylised graphics and sound convey the action well, and do contribute to the nice, slow build-up of tension before the skirmishes kick off. Even though you only control one character at a time, you are left feeling part of a team fighting against a common enemy. As a one player experience, the game's not too bad, thanks to an unscripted approach to each level. It does leave you without a real long-term goal to aim at though. However, in multiplayer mode, Battlefield 1942 really comes into its own, as no matter how strong the artificial intelligence of the computer opponent--and here it isn't bad at all--it's scant compensation for a real, unpredictable human opponent. At its maximum capacity, up to 64 humans can take part in any single game and, even with smaller numbers, the online nature of the game is completely compelling. It's an easy recommendation for those who like to fight their battles over the net, and a reasonable, if limited single challenge too. --Simon Brew
Rome. Aimed squarely at the growing online-gaming market, Electronic Arts' PC action-strategy title Battlefield 1942 is a tense, involving game that wisely doesn't totally ignore the single player. It's an easy recommendation for those who like to fight their battles over the net, and a reasonable, if limited single challenge too. The Road to Rome is a welcome expansion to EA's action-packed hit. And despite the fact it requires a copy of the original game to function, there's still plenty within the cellophane to justify the asking price. While it's still possible to play the game in single-player mode, even the most ardent fan would acknowledge that despite welcome improvements, the game's charms for the lone player are severely limited. This is a title that lives and breathes through its multi-player focus and when it's being played online, it really is enormous fun. At the heart of the full game was the range of vehicles; this add-on brings some welcome new additions to the fight. The crux of it all is still a battle being fought out between opposing armies and the action is viewed from a first-person perspective. To succeed, the game requires teamwork and lots of it: a hot-headed blast-and-go approach is rarely rewarded and the game is all the better for it. Where this add-on really scores though is in the design of the extra maps it provides: these offer a better all-round balance and slightly larger playing arenas. --Simon Brew
Advantages: Massive scope of playability Disadvantages: Lot of controls to memorise
...was that the designers of Battlefield 1942 had really gone to town on every aspect of game play leaving no stone unturned and making each aspect as good as all the others. Now this would be easy if each aspect was pants but seeing as each aspect is actually incredibly impressive in itself what you end up with is a game that in reality is more like several games all moulded into one awe inspiring game.
Initially you could say that the game is a FPS ... ...been converted to war games or historically correct battle simulations but for Battlefield 1942 I will make an exception as it really is very enjoyable and immensely playable.
PS ... don't blame me for Ciao!'s placement of this cat, it was like this when I found it !! ...

Advantages: Realistic game play, fantastic graphics. Disadvantages: Sniping online seems to somewhat laggy.
Battlefield 1942, isnt like any other first person World War II game i have ever played. This seemingly innovative game brings in new elements that may revolutionise the way First Person shooters are made from now on.
The game has a brilliant USP as it allows you to chose what type of soldier you would like to be in battle. Weather it be a scout, medic, anti tank specialist, assault soldier or engioneer you will be kept on the edge of your seat ... ...that particualr moment in time Battlefield 1942 is sure to have it.
Another brillaint feature of Battlefield 1942 is the way that once you ahve been killed, you can respawn and be a completely differnt kind of soldier in the field. These two features really make the game a pleasure to play.
The game play is so much more realistic than your normal shoot em up as before you know it you may be stranded in the middle of a raging battle with bullets ...

Advantages: endless fun and possibilities Disadvantages: high computer requirements
Hi guys!
Battlefield 1942 is a World War 2 first person shoot em up with a massive difference. Not only is it a first person, but also you can drive tanks, other vehicles and even planes and ships! You can’t do that on any other first person can you??!
Unlike most other games you do not take the role of a specific character with a specific role. This game is more realistic as you can chose from 4 different "player roles" which are scout, assault, engineer ... ...age rating although it has a European rating of 15 + but has no British certificate.
Prepare to face the enemy… Thanks MaCCa
costs about £30 for battlefield 1942. £20 for the expansion pack road to rome.

Advantages: Great idea, Ability to ride in more than 35 vehicles!!! Disadvantages: Lacking Music.
...to the right place, as Battlefield 1942 brings you the answer; allowing you to ride upon over 35 different vehicles, including fighter craft, bombers, tanks, ships...the lot. But on top of that its a good first person shooter too.
So after that quick introduction to the game, what have I left to say: um...its based during World War II, but Im sure you gathered that.
The Soldier:
------------
Right, well of course in order to man these machines ... ...as a soldier to the choice of either: a Scout (sniper), Assault (machine-gunner), Anti-Tank (Bazooka), Medic (Medic) or Engineer (Mines, Explosives, ability to repair vehicles).
With these different personnel, you also choose the side you wish to fight for, being either Allied or Axis. Each teams' soldiers have slight differences in the weapons they recieve, but mostly its all the same.
But we want to here more about the machines you say, well ...
