action-strategy title Battlefield 1942 is a tense, involving game that wisely doesn't totally ignore the single player. Set in the midst of the Second World War, the action plays out as a satisfying hybrid of the tactical, slow build-up of Ghost Recon, mixed in with the more action-based Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Kicking off with an overall map of the area, each game requires some strategic planning before you get down to business, and with 35 vehicles on offer, as well as five classes of character to step into the shoes of, there's much to consider. To the developers' credit, it's quite an easy game to get to grips with, and it positively reeks of polish. The stylised graphics and sound convey the action well, and do contribute to the nice, slow build-up of tension before the skirmishes kick off. Even though you only control one character at a time, you are left feeling part of a team fighting against a common enemy. As a one player experience, the game's not too bad, thanks to an unscripted approach to each level. It does leave you without a real long-term goal to aim at though. However, in multiplayer mode, Battlefield 1942 really comes into its own, as no matter how strong the artificial intelligence of the computer opponent--and here it isn't bad at all--it's scant compensation for a real, unpredictable human opponent. At its maximum capacity, up to 64 humans can take part in any single game and, even with smaller numbers, the online nature of the game is completely compelling. It's an easy recommendation for those who like to fight their battles over the net, and a reasonable, if limited single challenge too. --Simon Brew
Rome. Aimed squarely at the growing online-gaming market, Electronic Arts' PC action-strategy title Battlefield 1942 is a tense, involving game that wisely doesn't totally ignore the single player. It's an easy recommendation for those who like to fight their battles over the net, and a reasonable, if limited single challenge too. The Road to Rome is a welcome expansion to EA's action-packed hit. And despite the fact it requires a copy of the original game to function, there's still plenty within the cellophane to justify the asking price. While it's still possible to play the game in single-player mode, even the most ardent fan would acknowledge that despite welcome improvements, the game's charms for the lone player are severely limited. This is a title that lives and breathes through its multi-player focus and when it's being played online, it really is enormous fun. At the heart of the full game was the range of vehicles; this add-on brings some welcome new additions to the fight. The crux of it all is still a battle being fought out between opposing armies and the action is viewed from a first-person perspective. To succeed, the game requires teamwork and lots of it: a hot-headed blast-and-go approach is rarely rewarded and the game is all the better for it. Where this add-on really scores though is in the design of the extra maps it provides: these offer a better all-round balance and slightly larger playing arenas. --Simon Brew
Advantages: immerse gameplay that is easy to get into. Disadvantages: lag factors, certain bugs. me.
...The construct: Battlefield 1942 is an online First Person Shooter (FPS), a genre that has become extremely popular since the release of the CGA franchise Wolfenstein 2D. Battlefield 1942 is the next step from CS, in that it extends team based FPS by adding military crafts to the infantry combat: airplanes, tanks, heavy machine guns, ships, carriers, submarines, and defguns are a part of the new arsenal. This, teamed with class-based infantry system is pretty much the next chapter in the FPS genre. Not that crafts weren't tried earlier in FPS, but never this successfully nor with this much regard ...

Advantages: Fabulous online fun. Disadvantages: Single player mode is a bit dire.

Battlefield 1942 is unsurprisingly set in the middle of World War II and the fighting takes place in four main theatres of war - East and West Europe, Africa and the Pacific. Depending on where the battle takes place the player can choose to play as a soldier from one of the following four nations - America, Britain, Russia or Japan. Once you have decided upon your nation you then have to decide what type of soldier you wish ... ...of broadband I eagerly put Battlefield 1942 into my CD drive and couldn't wait to pit my wits against other sentient beings rather then my somewhat "battle challenged" AI friends. I can honestly say that I was not disappointed, and I was immediately surprised by the addictive nature of this game online. As soon as started playing against other human beings the game transformed in front of my eyes. Instead of racking up a huge body count I found myself ...

Advantages: Hours of great gaming and online multiplayer enhancements Disadvantages: The technical flaws and errors (Before the fixes)
...Now, about the game;
Battlefield 1942 (BF42) offers gamers the opportunity to imagine themselves fighting for their country (or some other country) on great historic battlefields like Stalingrad, Tobruk, Wake Island, Midway and Guadalcanal. BF42 drips with atmosphere, at least for this geezer… er, gamer. Forget the phony fictional locations of most shooters; BF42 drops you into the real deal, virtually speaking.
The game play in BF42 is a near ... ...Flashpoint or Ghost Recon, and more arcade play, like that in Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. One shot can kill, but you can also be wounded and survive long enough to dish out some payback.
BF42 does provide you with a way to get healthy, but it's not overdone. You won't find health packs strewn about the ground in convenient little spots to rejuvenate you like in most arcade shooters. Instead you have to find a building, not always a medical building, ...

Advantages: Endless possibilities + gameplay Disadvantages: Lack of detail in landscapes
This game is definitely one of EA's best performances. I am a huge fan of war games and this is by far the best I have seen so far for a number of reasons.
1) There are more maps you can play on than I can count, all based on real WW2 events. Even if all the maps do not take your fancy I can guarantee you'll find several which you'll be addicted to.
2) The maps are HUGE! There are infinite possibilities for which route you can take, places to hide ... ...to outposts which I despise especially in just about every other first person shooter.
3) There are more vehicles than on any other game I have come across, with 35 in the original game and others often being added. Having a variety of options to pilot a plane, be the tail-gunner, captain a ship with massive guns, drive a tank, operate a shore-defense cannon or simply enjoy the feeling of running round with a machine gun is great and means you rarely ...

...first time you play it. Battlefield is the game for you.
The backgroud of the game is set in World War 2 in 1942. All the soldiers, weapons, and envrionments are classic WW2. The sounds and effects are amazing as you hear the bullets flying over your head and the smoke from downed planes in the distance. This game is one shot one kill, so a very realistic feel which makes the game even more playable. Select your type of soldier: Assault, RPG, Sniper, ... ...which makes a modern day battlefield come true. With over 5000 people online at any one time, real war comes alive.
You will need a High spec PC to run this game efficiently, recommended 1.5Ghz, 128mb graphics gard, with over 512mb ddr, a quality monitor, and a joystick for the planes. If you have this then your not using the power of your pc unless you get this game.
Battlefield 1942 will cost you a mere 34.99 in the shops and 24.99 on amazon. ...
