You may not think so but I found it quite interesting when looking up information for this op!
It all began in 1880's when a man called Thomas Bell founded a wholesale grocery firm near the Tyne quays in Newcastle in the 1880s. Apparently he also founded a railway station! His well known top sellers were his 'Bells Royal' Baking powder and self raising flour.
After the death of the King, Edward VII, it became illegal to use the Royal name. As a result Bell risked losing a lot of business so he decide to improvise. Instead of Bell Royal, he shortened the brand name to BE RO, the name we know today. In 1958 Rank-Hovis Ltd acquired the business, which then became part of the newly formed RHM in 1961.
In the early 1920s, plain flour was the flour most commonly used, therefore Bell revolutionised cooking with his self raising flour. As it was sold only from independent grocers rather than straight from the mill, as was plain flour, it was a bit of a novelty.
In a bid to make self raising flour more popular among the general demonstrations in the early 1920s where freshly baked scones, pastries and cakes were sold for a shilling to visitors.
These were so popular that people demanded that they had copies of the recipes so that they could bake the dishes at home. Hence was born the Bero book. below I have posted a couple of pictures of how the first Be Ro Books looked compared to the final one which is the one we can buy today!
Originally a free recipe book was given out exclusively at cooking demos but they were also posted door to door. The book scontained wholesome and inexpensive food to feed all families on little cash.
The Be Ro book became an essential addition to any young housewives home whilst making Be Ro the best Known flour in the North of England!
The first Be-Ro cookbook was produced in 1923 and contained a total of 19 pages. Traditionally, local women from the North were featured on the front cover and "Miss Be-Ro" became its trademark.
Forty editions later, the book has grown to 86 pages, and is arguably one of the best-selling cookery books ever with more than thirty eight million copies having been sold. The latest edition is packed with even more inspiring dishes together with a brand new "quick and easy" section.
To get a Be Ro book , it is only £1.25 and you can even send cash taped to a piece of paper! Simply post with your address and how many copies you want and it will be delivered within 28 days. Cheques can also be sent to 'Be-Ro Recipe Book'.
The Be Ro book is not available in any other country!
Send your name address and payments to " The Be-Ro Kitchen, PO Box 100, Blackburn, Lancs, BB0 1GR."
The recipe book holds all the basics for any cook, with instructions for all types of pastry - choux, shortcrust, ruff puff, flaky, Hot water crust. There are also basic bread recipes and directions of how to use yeast.
Expect to find good old fashioned puds! My favourite is Eves Pudding, apples topped with a sponge. As well as biscuits galore and scones and tarts and loaves, you can also find Steak and Kidney Pudding, Dumplings, Bacon Roll wrapped in pastry,Sausage Rolls, Quiche!!
All recipes are clear and concise. Ingredients are given in grammes. Methods are step by step . Any specific technique needed in a recipe will be shown by pictures to assist your baking!!
There is also a page with 'Oven Management' details on, in other words conversions between Celsius and Fahrenheit and even Gas marks. There is a page, in miy version, which is a couple of years old now, a metric/imperial equivalents.
You should not be without one! Go on, it only £1.25!! I know you want to!!!
Advantages: It's easy & fool proof Disadvantages: Erm, you may gain some weight!
I was desperately searching for something today, something I have depended upon all of my life.
It was my copy of the Be-Ro recipe book, which my Nan gave to me as a child, it is old and battered and very crinkled around the edges, but it must be all of thirty years old now. I couldn’t be without it, simply because it is so easy to follow.
I have tried every recipe in this book, and all of them can guarantee success.
I wondered how to present ... ...all in Imperial measurements, due to the fact that it is over thirty years old, so I sat down to have a play with my search engines. Sure enough, there it was www.be-ro.com.
I f you bake only occasionally or every day I recommend this site. All measurements are in Imperial & Metric according to your preference, and they are all still true to the booklet I have. There is also quite a bit of information on the product itself.

Advantages: Very easy recipes, small, very traditional Disadvantages: Fatty
When I was a liitle child I used to love watching mum doing all kinds of cakes and biscuits. She always had this little book with pages, turned yellow with use and time, full of delicious recipes. You would know which were the favourite recipes, because the pages were full of blots and stains.
When I grew up and started working, one day, one of my collegues came with this little book of recipes, and I found out that thhis was the same old book that ... ...at the contents and all my office collegues ordered, not one, but more for their relatives. The first Be-Ro recipe book was published in 1923. It is said to be the best selling cookbook of all times. It's a guide to basic recipes and also a reference to the most experienced cook.
It is full of traditional recipes. Here in Malta only those people who used to work with British citizens, especially with the British cooks, know how to make the "real" ...

Advantages: Quick easy recipes using easy to find low cost ingredients. Disadvantages: Although updated, this book still has a war-time feel.
...batch baking, packaging food and home freezing too plus a very comprehensive index of recipes.
When compared to modern cookery books written by top celebrity chefs like Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver this little book with its emphasis on baking as opposed to gourmet recipes seems quaint with its economical use of ingredients and old fashioned common sense approach. If you have never baked a cake in your life or every one has been a disaster then ... ...be my first choice for a good old family dinner or home baking session. Plus most of the recipes are very simple to do and so if you are teaching the kids to cook it makes an ideal reference.

Advantages: Recreating your childhood teatimes for yourself Disadvantages: Having to cook because your husband says it tastes better than bought!
...3 brothers) when I left home and that in itself was comforting. That book, grease-stained and minus a few pages has recently been augmented with the new updated version but I still have to keep the old one for nostalgia alone. This book is a book of promises - something good to eat, something that will make you feel safe, the ultimate comfort food - and it delivers. All the recipes are easy to follow don't require too much technical knowledge or ... ...only costs £1.25! (quick update - its now only £1.09 in Morrisons).
The recipes are unashamedly old-fashioned with little respect paid to new thoughts about salt, sugar or fat - however the recipes are so solidly based that you can play about a little with these, particularly salt, to no ill-effect. What is great about the original recipes is that they give you excellent foundations for (what used to be) everyday stuff like pastry, scones, sponge ...

Advantages: great clear instructions and idiot proof. Disadvantages: not enough recipes
...I was sent this handy little recipe book by a friend who had obviously seen my attempts at baking. Anyway as soon as I recieved the book I thought excellent I can finally stop guessing and maybe even produce something that atleast resembled a cake of some sort. I am a wonderfull cook (but not at all big headed), but I was not given the flair for baking when i was born. The first recipe I tried out of the berohomerecipes book was a basic chocolate sponge cake and I must say I was most impressed how even I was able to follow a simple recipe that did not involve using daft ingredients such as the grated zest of this and a pinch or so of that, it just made a cake that was simple just like the ones Mum used to make. If I was to re-brand this little recipe book I would call it "the idiots guide to baking" because it's not for people who...

~~History of Be-Ro
Thomas Bell opened up a grocery business over a century ago and he had two top selling products; baking powder and self-raising flour. These were placed under the name ‘Bells Royal’, which was later renamed to ‘Be-Ro’. At exhibitions throughout the 1920’s, baking was a novelty and Be-Ro was exhibited and gained in popularity. People began to want to get the recipes, so that they could use the Be-Ro flour and baking powder at home to make these cakes, pastries and scones. So, a little book was created and handed out for free at these exhibitions in order to keep the popularity of Be-Ro alive.
The little book started out being around 19 pages and has since grown to 86 pages. Over 38 million copies of the book have been sold since 1923 when it was launched and this makes it...

...I have used Bero HomeRecipes since I was knee high to a grasshopper, learning from my mother who used to bake from the book every weekend.
The only Bero book I have in my possession now is the 39th Edition of HomeRecipes with Be-Ro flour. As you can imagine it is quite dog eared being used so much, however it is my lifeline to baking. I call it my Baking Bible.
As you can see from my address I live in Spain and have done for 5 years now. Is there any way that I can get hold of the latest addition of the Bero Home Receipe book please or any addition after the one I have got. It is an excellent book and I would recommend it to everyone who enjoys baking as much as I do....
