Advantages Very quick and easy to use

Disadvantages The size - especially if you want to cook in bulk or have twins or more!

Background and Purchase

I bought this product when my twin girls were 5 months old, the cost of pre-packed baby food convinced me that I could cook for my girls using the freshest ingredients. I didn't want to have to buy a multitude of appliances. This product seemed ideal, a steamer, food processor, and food reheater.

I bought it from Mothercare for £64.99, a little dubious about whether it would be value for money or not as I thought this was a lot to pay but didn't see any other product as promising available. I rationalised it by saying it means I don't need to buy a steamer and a food reheater, (I already have a normal sized food processor).

Preparation

It is very straigtforward to use, there are 3 water levels marked on the bowl, 1 - reheating, 2 - fruits, 3 - root vegetables/meat. Fill the basin with the required amount of water, pour this into the resevoir, chop your fruit, vegetables, or meat, and place in the basket, put the lid on, and switch on.

It comes with a booklet of ideas for early foods which was helpful at the start.

Cooking and Blending

A light comes on on the switch to indicate it is on, the light automatically goes out when the steaming is complete, take the lid off, and use the spatula provided to lift out the basket. Reserve the liquid from the bottom of the basin, tip the basket contents into the basin, add a little of the liquid if you need to, put on the lid and turn the switch to the blender.

It blends very quickly and to a very smooth consistency for young babies, or can be used sparingly to leave small lumps and chunks.

Reheating

Using water up to the level marked 1 on the bowl, a jar, or plastic conatiner can be placed in the basket and switch on the steamer, and it heats the food up. I found this very useful at the beginning when I froze the food in small quantities. I don't really use this function now - they are eating too much and the plastic containers I use now wouldn't fit in the bowl! So I would say this function is only useful at the start, although probably useful for longer with those who don't have twins (or more) to feed!

Cleaning

I've found it very easy to keep clean. A quick rinse after using it makes it even easier!

Summary

If you want to cook your own baby mush, and don't already own a steamer and food processor - this would be an excellent buy, it is proportioned right for making smooth baby size puree portions, I find my food processor can't make as smooth a puree as this does.

My girls are 8 months old now, and I still use it every day to make fresh fruit purees, although I do tend to make the main meals in larger quantities which isn't possible due to the siz\e of this.
