I love Ty Beanies. They are small cuddly toys, filled with beans and come in a variety of different shapes. Each one, apart from a few, has a date of birth and a short poem in its hang tag, or swing tag, they also all have a name.
They were first made as toys, but have now become collectable thanks to Mr Ty Warners’ idea to make each “model” for only a set length of time and then “retire” them and bring out some more.
I have collected more than 150 in just over a year and as there are always new ones coming out, I am sure that I will collect even more over the years to come.
The beanies come in a variety of animals, the most well known being the bears, but also birds, cats, dogs, wild animals, fish, and farm animals.
As I am a collector, I keep mine on shelves out of the children’s reach and keep the Hang Tags protected with little plastic covers.
However, I did get the children one each for Christmas, and they do play with them. After all if you buy something as a toy for a child, you can’t stop them from playing with it!
So are they toys, or collectibles, I think that the answer to this is - it depends on whom you are buying for. As with all collectibles, you shouldn’t collect them for what they will be worth, but because you like them. That way if they don’t gain value, it doesn’t matter, but if you need to sell them and they have gained value then you can make a killing. Buy and Play, or, Buy and Collect, it doesn’t matter which. If you like them, buy them. If you don’t - Don’t.

Advantages: Beanie babies are affordable, small, understuffed, bean filled toys that are enjoyed by children and adults as a toy and/or collectible, that can bring great pleasure to the receiver. Disadvantages: Collecting can become addicting, but is that really so bad?
