Kindersley. It is aimed at children aged 5-7 years old and helps to develop a wide range of literacy skills through four fun games. There are very clear instructions and each game is initially demonstrated, so children will quickly be able to develop confidence and independence. The games, which can be played at three different levels, have been carefully developed to practice the skills that children are learning as part of the literacy hour in school; for example, spelling words by choosing the missing sounds and putting words in the correct order to create a sentence. There are also two storybooks that children can choose to read together or alone. If children want a break from the games there is also an excellent printing section where children can make their own stationary and create lists, cards, writing paper and signs. This is a brilliant way to encourage children to write for a range of different purposes. As children play the games they collect snowflakes and they are then rewarded with a sticker for their sticker album. When all the stickers have been collected they can print out a certificate and listen to the reward song. There is an excellent guide for parents that discusses the skills the games are developing. The child profile shows parents how many times children have played each game and at what level and also suggests follow-on worksheets that can be printed out and used with children.Bear and Penguin's Big Reading Adventurewould be an excellent buy for parents or teachers to use with children aged 5-7 years. --Amanda York

Advantages: Sturdy, reliable Disadvantages: Lacking in features
...Being a Linux user , Messenger is one of the only big name mail clients available. It has all of the standard features you would expect – POP3 and IMAP support, signatures, newsgroup support – but I am beginning to find it lacking in a few essential features.
These features are such things as support for multiple POP3 mail servers to allow you to have, for example, one for business and one for personal use. Also, the Netscape profile system is a pain to use compared to those offered in Outlook and other clients such as Kmail. It’s these lacking features that have put me off, and I currently use the aforementioned Kmail.
However, bear in mind that this is Messenger 4.7, and many of these features have been fixed in Messenger 6, but I’m afraid that its out of my processor league!...

Advantages: ease of use, multi mailbox facility Disadvantages: no spell checker
...I first started to utilse eudora in work as an alternative to the general work package - simeon which was a completely useless and slow package.
Eudora has so much stuff available and with the onset of so many internet dealers its best using eudora. You can set up so many versions of eudora on your machine for different mailboxes and of course with this you can read and respond to your mails offline which at todays costs is great.
Filtering to mailboxes are great although the one big downside to the package is it doesnt always come in with a built in spell checker. This can be annoying and where outlook has an advantage but yu can easily build a spell checker on to the back of it....

Advantages: Cheap as chips - easy to install and use Disadvantages: Bill will cross you off his Xmas card list
...processor, slide show creator, spreadsheet, project management tool and a few other things. Each is similar enough to its Windows counterpart to have you up and running with it within a few minutes. OpenOffice can read or write files in their Windows formats so, for example, it will quite happily read and write “.doc” text files. This means that you can still share files and stuff with your stick-in-the-mud Windows buddies.
Your next stop as a Linux “newbie” should be a beginners manual. There is a “Big dummies” guide, which is better than nowt, but I found it rather twee. Anyway, have a rummage around on Amazon or, God forbid, the bookshelves at PCW. The main difference between Linux and Windows, aside from its reliability, lies in the way that it organises and manages its File System. In DOS/Windows you have a different file system...
