I have my two-year old nephew to thank for getting me into this. He has since moved on to the Tweenies and Bob the Builder, but my fiance and I are firm Bear addicts and I have even been known to relegate Eastenders when this is on. That’s serious!
Created by Jim Henson (him of the Muppets and Sesame Street) this is a children’s programme with fantastic loveable characters which teaches children about social values (how to share and so on), relationships, love, friendships, as well as more practical things (shapes, numbers, and so on.) It is on at 8am on channel 5, or at least it used to be, I no longer get channel 5, but I watch it on the disney channel at various times of day. There is a huge amount of merchandise available in the Disney Store, all of which I want!
A rundown on the characters:
Bear
Bear is huge, so huge that you doubt if he can get in the big blue house without knocking its roof off, but somehow he manages it. He’s the daddy in the house, although quite how he came upon the other animals is never revealed. He’s comforting, always good for a hug, knows how to diffuse arguments, can think of fun things to do, and makes a great triple-berry pie. His big nose likes to smell the viewer at the beginning of each programme, and his trademark line “Whats that smell?” leads to him telling you that you smell of freshly baked cookies/fresh milk/pancakes and icecream or something else along those lines. Always comforting to know you smell as good as a baby, even when you are 25. Bear is a great dancer, and singer, and does a mean rap. (honest!) He is famous for his Bear cha cha cha and his advice on potty training is a big hit with parents.
Ojo Ojo is the girl. She’s quite rubbish. She has a whiny squeaky lispy voice and is supposed to be a cute bear cub. But I hate her. She starts fights with Trilo, and she’s a bit stupid. She also has a teddy bear called snow bear. Grr.
Pip and Pop The otters live in the Big Blue House but they have their own otter pond in the garden. They are pretty cool. They do things together, being identical twins, and are purple and furry, and quite argumentative. They are a bit like the unruly teenage boys of the house, although they don’t actually steal cars and eat pizza.
Tutter Tutter is a teeny weeny blue mouse, with his own mouse hole in the Big Blue House and a huge big voice which is quite scratchy and a bit annoying. He is a pretty insecure mouse who needs quite a lot of reassurance from Bear. He is over-ambitious and seems to think he can do anything, and he’s quite brave. Grandma Flutter is his grandma who occasionally makes appearances at the big blue house. They love each other very much (and sing about it a lot.)
Treelo Is the best! He’s a fun loving lemur who speaks in a language that is all his own, and only Bear can really understand what he is saying. (although I can have a pretty good stab at it.) He is always smiling and likes to appear suddenly from a great height.
Shadow Is pants. She does the “stories” element in every programme, e.g. the boring educational bit where you learn a nursery rhyme. Bear always has to call out “Where oh where oh where is shadow?” and she always appears on the wall…. Why not try the ceiling? Too predictable for me, but then I am 23 years older than the intended viewer.
Luna Granny’s favourite character, luna is the moon, who Bear tells about his day every evening when he goes up to the attic. She is sort of wrinkly and smiley, in a comforting granny type way. She always has a few wise words to end the programme on, and helps Bear sing his goodbye song. (she’s never once in all my knowledge told him to get lose, she’s too busy doing the ironing.)
Bear's Imagine That! just won a Parents' Choice Gold Award. The gold awards are given to products that are judged as the highest quality, most appealing products in their genre. Criteria for judgments include the highest production standards, universal human values and a unique, individual quality that pushes the product a notch above others.
"Love to Dance Bear" is named "Toy of the Year" in the category of "stuffed animal" for ages 3 & 4 by FamilyFun Magazine.
There is also an official Bear in the Big Blue House fan club. It can be found at http://www.creationent.com/bear/index.html
Advantages: Entertaining and educational or children of all ages Disadvantages: Singing the catchy songs in public can be a bit embarrassing
...and I am addicted to Bear in the big blue house.
Don't laugh, it's true! I blame it all on my sister! Ok i'll explain. Are you sitting comfortably? This could take me a while.
Whilst staying back at my parents house at Easter earlier this year, I sat and watched Playhouse Disney with my sister (who is 19 yeares old by the way) and although she does this on a regular basis anyway, my excuse was my little baby girl Bethanny (then around 5 months ... ...a cathartic part of my Bear recovery therapy.
Bear in the big blue house is a Jim Hensen production. Those of you wh have watched the Muppet shows or movies or Sesame Street will be able to see typical "muppet" character traits in many of the "Bear" characters. It is shown on Playhouse Disney several times a day but you can also find it on channel 5 at 8 am on week day mornings. Bear starts with a really snappy theme tune which has my daughter glued ...

Advantages: Good catchy tunes that children will love to sing a long with Disadvantages: catchy tunes you will find yourself singing!
Bear in the big blue house, a program I had never heard of until a neighbours son ranted and raved that he wanted it on! Now my son is pretty much the same, including at the weekend when it isn't on! My son is 2 years old and sits absolutely captivated for 20 minutes every weekday morning from 8am until 8.20. Why?? The appearance of a seven foot bear and his friends, affectionately known as 'the guys'! Bear in the big blue house is a Jim Henson Company ... ...pals. Ojo the small teddy bear (not sure of gender), tutter a bizzare (small) blue?? mouse, pip and pop, 2 of the craziest (purple) otters i have ever seen! not to mention, treelo a green (?) racoon, shadow a shadow girl that tells stories and lunar, bears best friend, who he always sings the goodbye song with.
The show always follows the same format, beginning with the Blue house song, and bear greeting and sniffing you to see what you have had ...

...wrote I did about the bear in the big blue houses dancing Toy. Now I am writing about the thing that started Bear off, the immortal show, Bear in the Big Blue House.
I first started to watch Bear when mummy changed over from Sky Digital to NTL. The nasty people at Sky charged us extra for the Disney channel so mummy didn’t pay it. Now that we have changed, Daddy gets the Movie Channels so we get it as an extra! YAY!
Matty says that it is made by ... ...the others.
I watch Bear at 9:30am, Noon and 5:30pm on Disney Channel but I also have the option to watch it on Channel 5 8am weekdays. I don’t because Channel 5 is naughty.
For those of you who don’t know about the Bear and his house, which is, of course, blue, I will give you the basics.
Bear has a Blue house, which he lives in. Everyone knows that. He also lives there with his Friends, Tutter, Treelo, Ojo, Pip and Pop. He also has occasional ...

Advantages: Good educational show Disadvantages: wakes me up
...is a rather annoying Orange bear on the TV with an American accent! That would be Bear in the Big Blue House. I say annoying but that is only because it is associated with waking me up. Apart from this, Bear is very educational for the children. Bear appears in his Big Blue house with his friends who help him educate young minds. His friends comprise of: Tutter, Who is a little Blue mouse Ojo, who is a little bear Pip and Pop , Treelo, the Lemur ... ...Bear seems to be the ringleader though and the overall teacher. He is always interested in discovering new things and finding out how things work. With the help of his own curiosity and his friends, the giant orange shaggy bear delights young minds! Tutter Lives in Bear's Kitchen and is very strong minded. He likes to solve problems on his own and sometimes, with the reluctant help of Bear, gets the Job done! Ojo is a Lady bear who lives close to ...

Advantages: Good stories plenty of things for kids to see - educational Disadvantages: none that I can find.
...title suggests it's about a bear who lives in a Big Blue House. He lives there with a Little mouse, two beavers, and other assorted animals.
The programme was created by Jim Henson who created the muppets and much like that the puppet characters have great personalities, making it easy for kids to identify with them. The stories are about everyday type of things that children are able to identify with. There are music and songs in every programme ...

Advantages: No adverts, good value for money, good shows, often movies Disadvantages: When kids grow up, more Disney characters please!
Playhouse Disney is like the Disney Channel, only for young children. Children up to 5 will enjoy most of the shows because some of them are "interactive,"e.g. (Person On Screen): Stand up. *You don't stand up* (Person On Screen): Good job standing up. Me: LOL!!!!
So as you can see, it is more "interactive" then something like Bob The Builder.
Lineup
Mainly, these are the shows:
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
Handy Mandy
My Friends Tigger And Pooh
Imagination Movers
Little Einsteins
Higglytown Heroes
JoJo's Circus
BearIn The BigBlueHouse
64 Zoo Lane
5 Minutes More
Franny's Feat
Harry And His Bucket Full Of Dinosaurs
Johnny And The Sprites
(Often movies)
Most of these shows you don't know are Disney! Mickey Mouse (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) and Pooh (My Friends Tigger and Pooh) are basically the only Disney characters ...

Advantages: Great stimulation for children Disadvantages: My daughter watches it too much
One of things I looked forward to most about my daughter growing from a baby to a toddler was watching her dance about in front of the television and singing along with her favourite characters. Her first fascination was with BearIn The BigBlueHouse, that was until she discovered Milo, Bella, Fizz, Jake and Doodles, along with their carers Max and Judy, collectively known as the Tweenies.
I have become a Tweenies fan too. I like that fact that they are entertaining, but unlike my arch enemies The Teletubbies, they are educational and they speak correctly too! They show emotions, they play, they bicker, they are naughty and they are scolded.
Tweenies are ideal for pre school children (and many adults) who are starting to find their voices and need to increase their vocabulary. The programme focuses on Jake, Milo, Bella and Fizz ...

In The BigBlueHouse - My daughters, and I have to admit my favourite. The songs are great, and the characters are excellent, and the themes of each programme are useful whilst still being enjoyable. They put an different slant on learning. Last week there was an really informative programme to help with potty training, and if it is shown again I will video it and use it when it is time to potty train my daughter.
Winnie The Pooh - The old favourite, but the strange thing is my daughter loves the toys, but is very uninterested in the cartoon. She is only 12 months old, so maybe she will like it more the older she gets.
Bitesize - This is a cooking programme, and it has different presenters accompanied by a glove puppet called Mitzy, and the emphasis is on washing your hands and making sure a grown up helps with the cooking ...
