Reading with your children is one of the most valuable things you can do together. Amongst other benefits it helps with their language skills, is a good way for them to relax and is a great way to bond with your children.
But it has to be fun - and this book certainly fits the bill.
Bear on A Bike by Stella Blackstone is one of our children's favourite books.
It is a Barefoot Board Book and is beautifully illustrated by Debbie Harter.

"Bear on a bike (raft/boat/carriage etc) As happy as can be, Where are you going, bear? Please wait for me!"
After visiting various different places, the book concludes with "Goodbye and goodnight!" - the perfect sentiment for last thing at night.
The illustrations are bright and colourful with lots of opportunities for discussion with your children. My girls particularly like the funnel on the train that resembles a pint of Guinness, ("Daddy's juice!!" they exclaim!!) and the beach scene. There are plenty of objects to count and point out, further developing the educational aspects of this book. The illustrations are also very detailed with new things to notice every time (although may be not once you have read it as often as we have!)
It is suitable for reading together from ages 0-4, alone from 4-7 - this information was taken from the Barefoot Books website where you can discover more about the company's origins, values and products. My girls have had this book since they were one and a half, so we should get our money's worth!!
This book is also available in a paperback version but we have the board book which is extremely robust. My girls have had this since Christmas 2006 and it is still in good condition (despite being read almost EVERY night!) Indestructible is probably tempting fate but it is a very durable book.
It has 24 pages, of which 22 compose the actual story, but even the inside back and front covers are full of colourful pictures too.
The book measures a compact 165mm x 170mm x 18mm, ideal for toting about in the car or pushchair.
At £4.99 (RRP) it is not cheap, but then books never are bought new. It is available on Amazon for £3.99 (new) and from £1.27 (used). May be you could Mooch it!!! Or check out your local library.
The only downside of this book is that my girls are seriously addicted to it!! I even found myself reciting it by heart in the car one day on a long journey when the CD player had decided to stop working!!
I would definitely recommend this book for its appeal to children, its durability and it is an appropriate length of story for bedtime. It would make a lovely gift for any small child.
Advantages: Lots of things to look for and count Disadvantages: none
***Background***
StellaBlackstone is well known for her Bear series including Bear On A Bike, which has featured as a storybook in a few Cbeebies shows such as Tweenies. Her books are full of clever rhymes that tell lovely stories.
Clare Beaton is responsible for the illustrations in this book although they aren't sketched or painted as in most children's books. They are made up of many different materials, sequins and buttons. She has used this technique in many books to go with stories from a number of different writers as well as for some of her own.
***The Story***
The story starts with?
"I saw a secret seahorse deep down in the sea.
I tried to swim beside him. He was too quick for me.
We are then told how he swims past colourful reefs, past little fishies and mermaids until we find a dark cave.
"Then in ...
