We had to upgrade our MaxiCosi Priori (with which we've been very pleased) as our large (over 3ft!) two and a half year old's legs were getting too long for it and digging in the back of the passenger's seat.
We spent some time and shoe leather traipsing round stores (there wasn't one John Lewis store across London that we hadn't visited) trying out various options, having a think, weighing up the solutions. We'd assumed we'd just go on the MAxiCosi Rodi as we'd had the two younger models successively of this brand. The problem with which we were faced, was that most booster type car seats that 'sit' on the back seat (rather than being strapped in like the models for younger ones), such as this one, do not have the five point harness, but rely, instead, on your using the car's seat belt. The Rodi was a case in point. Manufacturers, therefore, don't recommend that you put your wee ones into this stage of car seat until they're three. I was reassured.

He loves his 'Big Boy' seat and has not tried to wriggle out of it once. It's comfy enough for the longer journeys with really well padded side head rests/ impact points, and will grow outwards as well as upwards with our son (a unique feature of the Hipsos is that it expands widthways too with a simple tug of the handle at the back) in addition to being able to be taken apart and become a simple booster seat with armrests when he approaches double figures.
My only complaint was that John Lewis have willingly oversold this seat - cunningly, they commission a seat fabric particular to themselves, so that when I tried to claim back a fiver (having found it cheaper on the internet) they were having none. It was still, however, cheaper than another department store we checked out. If I were to buy it again, I'd go to JL for the service and buy online from Kiddicare or someone.
(I think it cost about £80, but I've seen it cheaper since)
Advantages: Spacious Disadvantages: its really good
This car seat has got loads of room for you child! It seats your child in so no slip up where he/she can crawl or wriggle out! It supports there head with a cushon at coth sides so if theres a car crash you child can't get damaged! Back comfy seated pads and even a arm rest for your child so your child comfy along the whole journey! There is a seat belt to easily hassle free tuck them in there seat! The seatbelt is wide but your could not find it ... ...I would recommend the chair for the ages between 3 to 5 years old! It is grately padded in most places so that your child would love the seat! The chair is easy to clean you can get down the sides and eveywhere! The chair is extremly safe so theres no need to worry! The value for money is great! you can get the car seat from HALFORDS! ...

Advantages: Adjustable shoulder clip for seatbelt Disadvantages: Quite tall for younger children
With our youngest rapidly growing out of his rear-facing seat, we decided that he should graduate into his (15 months) older sister's seat, and that we'd buy a new seat for her that would last a few years.
Having taken a look at a number of models, we decided on the Hipsos for a number of reasons. Firstly, it appeared the most comfortable, particularly with the padded side headrests. It had also faired well in the safety test we read, and the back ... ...it as a booster cushion when she gets older.
However, probably the biggest differentiator for us with the adjustable shoulder clip, which can be swapped to whichever side it's needed. This slides so that it sits just above the childs shoulder, and then clips onto the main seatbelt to hold it tight. This means that the belt can always be kept at the correct tightness for the child and, more importantly, at the correct height. This is especially pertinent ...
