Beechams ALL IN ONE.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three days ago I was boasting about how I am the only one in my University flat who didn't get 'freshers flu'. The day after, I woke up feeling absolutely awful! I had a full-blown cold!
Feeling very sorry for myself I wandered down the medical aisle of Asda looking for something to ease my aches and pains, blocked nose and cough. I saw various flu remedies and finally picked up a packet of Beechams All In One Tablets as they claimed that they would fix a headache, blocked nose, sore throat and chesty cough. They also claimed to be non-drowsy.
The tablets came in boxes of 8 or 16 so I grabbed the pack of 16 tablets which cost me just over £4 (not cheap compared to the alternatives!!!).
These tablets contain three active ingredients - 250mg Paracetamol to ease those aches and pains and the sore throat, 100mg guaifenesin to loosen phlegm (eewww gross!) and relieve a chesty cough, and phenylephrine hydrochloride to unblock your nose and sinuses and help you breathe more easily.
The dosage for both adults and children over 12 years old is two tablets every 4 hours although only 8 tablets should be taken in a 24 hour period.
As soon as I got back from the Asda I took a couple of the tablets with a glass of water and curled up looking pathetic on the sofa. After a while my headache and other body aches began to ease and had pretty much gone after about 30 minutes. My cough also began to ease and I felt less phlegmy! However my nose stayed firmly blocked and in the end I had to resort to my good old Sudafed spray to enable me to breathe again!
The effects of the tablets seemed to last for about 3 hours and then I began to feel like death again.
Fortunately I didn't have any side effects from the tablets but in rare cases paracetamol can cause skin rashes and other allergic reactions, guaifenesin can cause an upset tummy, and phenylephrine hydrochloride can occasionally cause high blood pressure, headache, dizziness etc. Although obviously these effects are pretty rare.
People who shouldn't take these tablets are - anyone allergic to any of the ingredients (obviously!), people who have kidney or liver problems, overactive thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. These tablets also shouldn't be taken if you are on anti-depressants or anticoagulants.
Beechams All In One Tablets are manufactured on behalf of GlaxoSmithKline.
Overall I wasn't too impressed with these tablets, they did ease my aches and pains but it took a while for them too kick in, they didn't even touch my blocked nose which I was annoyed about although to be fair, I haven't yet found a decongestant in tablet form that actually works! The tablets were very expensive compared to Asdas own brand, although I must admit that they did 'loosen my phlegm' quite nicely and relieve my cough which provided some welcome relief. I do not think I would buy them in future because I don't think they are worth the money, I would try and buy a cheaper version and then just carry on using my Sudafed decongestant nasal spray. I don't think I can say that I would recommend these as although they are quite impressive at dealing with the phlegm and a cough, they don't do much more than normal paracetamol would! The only other positive thing that I can say is that they didn't make me at all drowsy so that claim was true!
I can't take these tablets because i'm on anti-depresants, but i find i'm better off taking a couple of paracetamol with some hot honey and lemon (freshly made - not powder) and if i have phlegm (nice!) i use the old fashioned method of a couple of drops of either ecualyptus oil or olbas oil in a bowl of steaming hot water and lean over it, cover my head with a towel and inhale! For a blocked nose try some ecualyptus, peppermint oil or some olbas oil on a hankie or tissue and inhale every now and then - works a treat :-) Great review though babes, but you're right, these things are pricey! Sarah xx
