I have always found it surprising just how quickly a cough and cold can actually take hold over a person's body to the extent that they are basically confined to bed in a matter of hours.
A few Saturday's ago I had just got in from doing the food shopping and felt absolutely awful, my limbs felt as if they were made of lead and my head felt as if it was stuffed with cotton wool. Now I don't suffer from the flu at all, but this had happened so quick that the only thing I could do was to go and sleep this off, this was at 2pm. I awoke later on that evening at 8pm and was sweating and had also developed a temperature as well. I thought I had felt rough before but by the time I awoke I was even worse than what I thought I would be!!
Now I don't usually like having to resort to remedies and mixtures, but in this case I though I had to, just to lift the temperature and the headaches would be a blessing anyway. So the other half went out and got me a box of Beechams All in One. When I opened the box I thought it was going to be a bottle with a dainty little plastic spoon, I was well wrong. To my surprise the contents were six 20ml plastic pouches with the medicine inside ready to take. So I took one straightway, I tore the tab from the top of the pouch and swallowed the contents. It tastes absolutely disgusting and to be honest nearly put me off from taking the rest which you're supposed to take once every four hours, but once you've taken a few your mouth does tend to adjust and you get to the stage where you just ignore it anyway.
I was surprised at how quick it actually kicked in as other well known remedies such as Lemsip fails on me completely, to which I avoid that now. Intrigued I got the box and read the side of it. The main ingredient in this stuff is Paracetamol. Each dose contains a single dose equivalent to a single tablet. This helps in numbing the nerve endings around the body so that you don't feel any pain and also controls your temperature as well. According to what the white leaflet says in the box the Paracetamol works on the area of the Brain that controls body temperature reducing the impact of the condition itself.
Secondly, we have the ingredient that acts in a similar manner to that of Linctus, the ingredient is called Guaifenesin and this is one of the reasons that this syrup tastes so bad, well it does to me. This helps to counteract ant cough or chest infection that have or may have been caused by the cold itself; effectively it stimulates the receptors in the gut, which acts as a catalyst to increase fluid production I the airways which assists in making the cough better and also easier to cough up Phlegm. Not nice I know but this part id what really gets to me on the occasions that I do get an illness like this. You know that something is happening in the stomach as I felt a warm feeling after I had taken a dose.
The last thing in this mixture is Phenylephrine which acts as decongestant and ensures that the blood vessels are contracted allowing the person to breathe better without the feeling of being bunged up. This also tends to dry up a runny nose as well which in turn means that headaches are reduced as well. Well the question is, does it actually work? Well after a couple of hours my head had cleared and I felt a lot better than I did before I took the dose. It was a strange feeling as I felt that I was almost myself again, except I knew I was dosed up with this stuff., so I can safely say that it does work. In fact by Monday I had nearly run out of the pouches. With me being me I had stupidly decided to go into work as normal on Monday for my 8.30 start and by 10am with the manner in which I was coughing was actually sent home. Looking back I have no idea as to why I did this as although I felt better I was still a little rough around the edges. On the way home I stopped off at Boots band got some more of this magical liquid. I was surprised to see that Boots stocked this in three methods, these are:
Sealed pouches containing 20ml doses
A 160ml bottle (which is the equivalent to eight pouches)
Tablets with the dose in solid form
What surprised me more was the difference in price between the bottle and a pack of the pouches, the bottle was £2.69 which covered 8 doses and the pouches were almost double in cost at £4.99 for six. As you imagine I immediately grabbed the bottle as doing a quick calculation in my head showed it was effectively a 2 for 1 offer with the bottle when comparing it to the pouches. Also the bottle comes with a handy clear plastic measuring cap to ensure that none is wasted and more importantly ensures the limit is not exceeded, which the notes say can be fatal and I will strongly advise that the notes are read before using this stuff anyway as the combination of the three main ingredients do make this quite a strong concoction to take when ill. I went back to work on the Wednesday, fully recovered allowing the Medicine to run its course. This for me was genuinely a miracle cure as it tended to speed up the recovery so that I could go back sooner than expected. To give another perspective other people that I work with, who I think kindly passed the germs on to me, have been off work for a week or more with the same symptoms as I had. Bottom line for me is that this is something that I would use again, and as I soon as I feel a bit "off" will be something that I would definitely use again in the future.
Advantages: takes all symptoms away, really works Disadvantages: some people may find it pricey

I have used beechams all in one for the past couple of times I've had a cough and a cold. Both times I had a tickly cough, but the second time, (which I've only just recovered from), I had a blocked nose, a fever and aches and pains added to the mix! Now I put up with it for a whole week hoping that it would pass, but after figuring it out that it wouldn't just go, I got my fiance to nip to our local and buy me a bottle of my finest medicine. ...

Advantages: Tackles headaches, shiver, aches and pains and a chesty cough. Disadvantages: More expensive than Lemsip.
It's an unfortunate fact that the first tangible thing that your grandchildren are likely to give you is an infection. I came back from visiting them last month with a hell-cat-mud-wrestler of a viral infection and some sticky finger marks on my glasses which were the very devil to remove. Within a couple of days I ached, felt shivery and had a very sore throat and a tickly cough.
I raided the medicine cabinet and found some Lemsip Max Strength ... ...drink seemed a good idea. It was too. Whilst I was drinking it my throat felt soothed, but the aching persisted and the shivering became a fever. After two days it was obvious that Lemsip was having little or no effect. My husband was despatched to the chemist.
He came home with Beecham's All in One. It's a predominantly blue box containing a squat, clear bottle of the mixture. For £3.95 you get 160ml, or eight 20ml doses, and there's a handy measuring ...

Advantages: Really works to stop you coughing and get some sleep! Disadvantages: I didn't find any
...bought a 160ml bottle of Beechams All in One which I had never tried before. It says on the box that it contains 8 doses, is non drowsy and is good for headaches, bkocked nose, sore throat and chesty cough. It is menthol flavoured syrup. It warns you not to take it with alcohol, other paracetamol products and if you are under the care of a doctor or are pregnant - you would need to read all the small print that these sort of medicines usually contain.

Three days ago I was boasting about how I am the only onein my University flat who didn't get 'freshers flu'. The day after, I woke up feeling absolutely awful! I had a full-blown cold!
Feeling very sorry for myself I wandered down the medical aisle of Asda looking for something to ease my aches and pains, blocked nose and cough. I saw various flu remedies and finally picked up a packet of BeechamsAllInOne Tablets as they claimed that they would fix a headache, blocked nose, sore throat and chesty cough. They also claimed to be non-drowsy.
The tablets came in boxes of 8 or 16 so I grabbed the pack of 16 tablets which cost me just over £4 (not cheap compared to the alternatives!!!).
These tablets contain three active ingredients - 250mg Paracetamol to ...
Advantages: much better than taking liquid medicine Disadvantages: pricy
Having recently been struck down with flu (insert sympathy here) I felt i needed to take something to alleviate the symptons, although my dad insists that its better ti let it take its course, i was feeling too rubbish to do anything at all so i needed to take something - anything! to make it abit better.
Im all too aware that antibiotics can be bad for you if you take them too much and being an asthmatic, my fluey symptoms turned into a chest infection. So i dragged myself to boots after taking 2 packets of beechams cold and flue capsules (in vain). I was all prepared so subject myself to the horror that is liquid expectorant when i spied beechamsallinone tablets, promising to break down my phelgm (niiiice) and relieve my chest cough. AND they were on special offer, half price in boots, woo hoo! I didnt need any more convincing ...
Advantages: It works - eventually Disadvantages: Expensive, takes a while to kick in
lecturer to nurse me better sounds kinda fun ;D) Ahem, anyway off to raid my big black furry box I went (that?s my first aid kit, it?s a black furry thing with a face and has a furry green hat - don?t ask, had it since I was a nipper).
Routing through the out of date emergency stash I keep (must remember to update), I found to my relief BeechamsAllinOne Tablets, non-drowsy - excellent won?t fall asleep at work later then (you may laugh but that?s happened to me before luckily they knew I was ill and didn?t sack me, didn?t give me the rest of the day off either the swines). Sorry rambling again, according to their nice colour co-ordinated dark and light blue packaging with the white writing, this is effective for headaches (yes I have a stinking migraine), blocked nose (yup one of those too), sore throat (nope safe there) and chesty cough ...
