Reviews of Beer »
Works best with a meal, not really for hardcore drinking .
Advantages: Tasty, pasteurised and filtered. Disadvantages: Heavy on the stomach, fattening, canned version is largely foam.
...probably that the majority of John Smiths Extra Smooth is the pasteurised and filtered version, served from pressurised kegs, rather than the more traditional version served by pubs from casks. It is easy to drink in moderation, like most ales and goes down nice. 4% proof. Summary: A delicious bitter best served cold. ...

"NEWKIE" A British tradition
Advantages: A classic British beer Disadvantages: In cans
I first tasted Newcastle in The Golden Lion in Soho in 1979 when I was very young and on my way to join the army.
I liked the taste and have been drinking it on and off since then.
It has a nice nutty taste and is very easy to drink, you could quite easily drink a few bottles without realising how much you had gone through.
Newcastle is a beer available on tap in pubs and in cans, however it is far better in bottles.
It is a dark beer which although ... ...people.
The cans although not as good as the bottles do a good service and are one of the few that have transfered well, there is no acidic taste you get with cans sometimes.
This is however one of those beers that do need to be chilled in the fridge, but it is well worth it.
A good advert for us older drinkers is The likely Lads they are often seen drinking a bottle of "Newkie" and the taste is as good then as now. ...

Invite a Hobgoblin into your home this Halloween
Advantages: Smooth, malty and delicious, with a lovely deep red colour Disadvantages: Nasty hangover if overindulged
...called Hobgoblin, brewed by the Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire.
I’ve sampled this beer on a fair few occasions in the past: at beer festivals, on draught in pubs (when I’ve been lucky enough to find it), in bottles and, more recently in cans. My most recent experience with Hobgoblin – on Friday evening, as it happens - was from a can (actually, from a glass, but you know what I mean!), so I’ll be focusing on the canned variety for the purposes ... ...say about it will also apply to the bottled and draught versions, except that they are even more pleasant for NOT being from a can (as you’d generally expect!) and that the strength is different – but I’ll get into that a bit later on….
Packaging
The dark blue can is illustrated with a picture of the ‘Hobgoblin’ – a rather sinister-looking fellow, armed with what appears of be an axe and a quiver of arrows, and a banner informing us that ...

Hobgoblin - Scarey
Advantages: Lovely taste Disadvantages: No discounts on bottles
Hobgoblin is a well advertised beer with its own pubs etc, this would normally lead me to dismiss it.
However the bottled beer has a strong mellow taste which you could drink anywhere and surprisingly the canned beer tastes the same.
I am crying out for for an offer with a glass but this doesn't seem to be in line.
Hobgoblin is a beer well worth buying and would be enjoyed buy all members of the family, even a lager drinker!
If you had a day ...

Warm Your Cockles!
Advantages: Rich warming beer that is great for a cold night. Disadvantages: Not as mouth tinglingly good as some winter beers.
...outside, we ought to try Youngs Winter Warmer.
~~~THE BREWERY.
Youngs is based in Wandsworth in London at the Ram Brewery. They have been producing beer since at least 1581 and, as such, mean it is the oldest site where continuous brewing has occurred. It’s funny to think that Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne when the first beer was made! In those days it was just known as the Ram Brewery and it didn’t actually become “Youngs” until much later ... ...regular beers you may find Youngs Bitter (a pale session beer at 3.7% ABV), Ramrod (a medium strength beer at 5% ABV) and Special (a classic bitter at 4.6% ABV).
~~~THE BEER.
The Awards****
Winter Warmer was given the Gold Medal at the Brewing Industry International Awards in 1998. It is a firm favourite at winter Beer Festivals and figure largely in the “best beers” lists.
The Stats****
Winter Warmer weighs in at 5% ABV and is brewed using ...
