One beet can contain : 1.6g of protein, 0.17g of fat ( that’s hardly nothing),9.6 of carbohydrate, 6.7g of sugar, 16mg of calcium, 0.8mg of iron, 4.9mg of vitamin C and the list can go on and on…

how to grow them
Beet is a fairly straightforward vegetable to raise and one which has long been popular. It has so many uses in the kitchen that you are never likely to waste any of it-as well as adding rich colour and flavour to soups, salads and chutneys it is excellent server as a hot vegetable and its high sugar content makes it a very good base from home-made wine.
The most common type of beet is round and deep carmine in colour. Those are usually eaten in salads, when they are young and tender but they can also be grown as a main crop and stored. There are two other shapes- oval and long. Long beet is not often grown today , partly because it is less sweet and succulent then the round varieties and partly because the roots are so large that they will not fit into today’s modern saucepan. Although most varieties of beet are red, whit and golden beets are now available. These are round shaped and their main advantage over red is that they do not ' bleed' in salads.
Globe beets are reasonably tolerant of soil conditions and will grow in any well drained soil which does not dry out in summer. However light sandy soils are ideal for all types of beet, particularly long varieties, which need a deep sandy loam to grow well. Select a site that is open and sunny for best results. Begging preparing heavy soils in late autumn, light soil can be prepared early in spring. If the soil is very heavy dig in plenty of half rooted straw or peat to lighten it. Coarse sand can also be used. Avoid adding fresh manure when preparing a bed for beet to you are likely to get forked, misshapen roots. Ideally beet should be grown on part of the vegetable plot which was manure the previous season- they can follow celery, peas or runner beans. If the soil has an acid reaction, supply lime sometimes in mid-winter sufficient to make the pH neutral or very slightly alkaline. In spring just before sowing apply a compound fertilizer.
Although beets are reasonably hardy, seedling can be damage by heavy frost. If the seedling are not killed outright, they are liable to be stunted and produce seeds without forming an edible root. There is no point in sowing before mid-spring, unless you live in a very mild area or can give cloche protection. For spring sowing, try to make a point of using bolt-resistant varieties, as a beet has a great tendency to run to seed in dry or hot conditions. Round beets for salads should be sown in small batches until mid-summer.
Sow each seed cluster 2 in. apart in rows 1in.deep and after sowing fill in the drill with soil. Rake lightly to give a fine surface and water if the weather is dry. Germination should be within 12-24 days of sowing. When the seedlings appear, there will be clusters of them at each station. Remove all but the strongest as soon as they are large enough to handle. The cultivation needs of beet are moderate. For the best flavour, beets should grow quickly, otherwise tastes, cracked, misshapen and tough roots will result. This means the plants must have a steady supply of water at the roots, especially during mid and late summer. Because beet in its natural state grows near the sea, a light application of agricultural salt is useful. Birds are much attracted to seedlings and some protection is essential. You can protect the rows with netting, pea guards or black cotton thread twined around and through the leaves.
Round and intermediate varieties should be ready for pulling when they are about 1” in diameter, about eight weeks after they are sown. These first pulling are in fact a form of thinning, as grow larger. For this reason try to pick evenly over the rows so the rest of the crop is reasonably spaced. These first pulling will be very tender and useful for salads. Continue pulling more beet as and when needed, until they reach 3” in diameter. Try to pull the roots as soon as they are fully mature. main crops should be ready for harvesting from early autumn, continuing for about two months. Loosen the roots with a fork or spade and then lever out; it is best not to wrench the plants out by pulling the leaves. Do not cut off the leaves but twist them off about 2” above the crown. This is to avoid breaking the skin and subsequent bleeding, which would detract from the flavour and colour. Then shake the root to remove adhering soil. The leaves of some varieties can be eaten fresh or cooked as green. All beets can be stored for future use; if properly stored they will keep until the first of the following year’s crop is ready for lifting.
Pest and diseases: Mangold flies, Beet carrion beetle, Swift moth, Scab, Damping off, Violet root rot, Beet rust, Crown gall, Born deficiency, Magnesium deficiency, Manganese deficiency
My favourite recipe: Cook two medium beets, then peal the skin. Then great the beet on the medium greater. Ad sugar and pepper. Chop half of onion in small pieces and mix with beet.

...want to grow it.
Beetroot is a vegetable that grows in British gardens during the late spring and summer. It has rather attractive leaves, generally green with deep red veins above ground and below ground a globe swells to be pulled up, cooked and eaten. You can buy packets of seeds in lots of places that sell seeds. Garden centres sell them, a lot of supermarkets sell them and a well known D.I.Y. store that sells seeds and plants as well sell them.
... ...seeds lightly along the row. Beetroot seeds come in clusters so you will get clusters of plants coming up together so don't sow too thickly or you will have to pull loads out to give them room to swell. Keep the row relatively weed free, water in dry weather and wait….. You should be able to pull small roots of beet about 12 weeks later, you can pull in-between ones out and cook baby beets and leave the others to fill the spaces thus giving you larger ...

...a few good varieties of beetroot to grow and these are Pablo which is a round beetroot with a smooth shape, then there is Red Ace which is a good grower and the best to grow in my opinion is the Bolthardy, this is a good plump round shaped beetroot with a deep red colour and strong flavour. Easy to grow with a good yield.

Beetroot is quite easy to grow and is relatively pest free apart from the birds, but sometimes the leaves will go a little brown and fall off, this is caused by Mangold flies which can be treated with an organic pest spray. Look out for aphids too and keep control of them with organic sprays.
Once you have cared for your beetroot you can harvest them at ...

...all know by now that Beetroot is very good for us.
It has recently been featured in many programmes on tv and articles in newspapers
Supermarkets picked up on trend and stock it on permanent basis now.
Beetroot's main benefits are that it contains no fat, very few calories and is a great source of fibre.
But what do you do with that?
There are lots of different recipes, but I thought I'd share with you one which dead simple to make, takes no ... ...pack or 2 of cooked beetroot depending on how many people you are cooking for. (just cooked beetroot, but not the one in vinegar)

That's it!!!
and watch your clock :-)

...and boys, what role does beetroot play in the modern world?
This archaic vegetable must surely be consigned to the Dark Ages as it has no gastronomic benefit to the 21st century.
Apart from pickling in tart vinegar or adding to an unhearty broth like dish (i.e. soup), I simply cannot understand how one might utilise such a root (vegetable).
To excite potential purchasers and to tittilate the tastebuds, beetroot picklers across the land market ... ...being sold at the end of the day remains an unpalatably textured, garishly coloured accompaniement to no meal, the dye of which inevitably diffuses itself on all food whch it surrounds.
Nevertheless, when eaten with a table spoonful of lard, a sliced beetroot makes a scrumptious late evening snack. ...

of sun with soil that is not too damp. They are planted individually, upright & about an inch (25mm) under the surface. Plant the cloves about 4 inches apart. Rows should be about 18 inches apart.
It is traditional to plant garlic on the shortest day of the year. In the USA and Europe in spring/late fall/early winter. Garlic is a friendly plant & grows well planted with flowers & vegetables - particularly lettuce, cabbage & beetroot. It does not go well with legumes, peas, and potatoes.
HARVESTING
As garlic reaches maturity, the leaves will brown then die away this is the cue for harvest time. Too early and the cloves are too small, too late & the bulbs will split. Once picked dry ASAP.
STORAGE - not in fridge because it is likely to go soft & mouldy. Needs to be stored in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight.
