I bought this book on Ebay (for about a fifth of the RRP £16.99!) after reading mixed reviews, and figured I'd just have to find out for myself if this book was all it was made out to be.
I personally have always found Katie Price, aka Jordan quite intriguing. I've watched many documentaries about her, gaining a brief insight into her life and they have always shown her in a good light. After watching an episode of the most recent television programme featuring Katie; 'Katie and Peter: The Next Chapter' which is shown on ITV2, I finally decided I should definitely read this book.
'Being Jordan' is the first of her two autobiographies and I found it an extremely compelling read. If you're looking for a book that is intellectually stimulating , then this probably isn't for you. However, if you would like to find out a few things you never knew about a few celebrities then this definitley fits the criteria.
That aside, this woman has undoubtedly been through a lot since she started her career as a glamour model - heartache, depression, abortions, miscarriages, you name it, she's probably suffered it. After reading this book, I feel a lot of empathy towards her and I feel she deserves a lot of praise for managing to cope and perservere allowing her to get to where she is today; a successful career under her belt, mother to (soon) three children and proud wife.
The book itself has a hefty 34 chapter but is 277 pages long, not including the pages filled with photos, so the chapters are fairly short. I have to say, I found this book a very light read and did not take me more than a couple of nights to finish it. An ideal summer read.
I reckon about 75% of this book is about her relationships with men. She talks about the way that they treated her, where they went, what they did, and wrote a fair bit about their sex lives. In many cases, I feel she wrote about them to get a bit of revenge and to give her side of the story as many sold kiss and tells to the newspapers. To those who don't read such newspapers like myself, it does get a tad confusing when she refers to them and you have no idea what this other person has actually said about her! She is extremely convincing if her book is based on lies created to get revenge on people. I believe her side after reading, especially how badly Dwight Yorke (the father of Harvey, her first son) treated her through the pregnancy and after he was born. That man was awful!
Amongst all of the details of her relationship she talks about her career, how she started off, when she got her big break, her family's reaction to her becoming a pin-up etc. Surprisingly, there isn't a great deal about her plastic surgery, which I thought there would've been, seeing as they are behind her success as a glamour model!
Towards the end of the book she gives birth to her son, Harvey, and she talks about his disability and medical problems and the trouble she has with finding anybody who could help. This is a really moving part of the book, and the real Katie Price really shows.
Overall, I think that this book makes a good summer read. When you are reading it, she has wrote it in a style similar to that of somebody talking; it isn't a descriptive book by any means, she just tells it how it is. After reading it, I feel like I do know Katie Price a bit better as opposed to Jordan and I guess that is what she set out to do with this book.
