I always do my research before making an electronic purchase, have a look on the internet to see what products are availble, compare them against each other and then have a look at the price. If its not in my price range, i discard it!
In the end, I went with teh Belkin, mainly because I know that Belkin do quality networking products. I already had a modem router at home, but i have three laptops that i needed to connect, and i don't like being bounded by wires (simply because that means everyone ends up in my room!) so i decided to invest in this. Already an advantage, this product came with a free USB wireless adapter!
Firstly, the difference between wireless G and wireless B (802.11g or 802.11b) is that G is faster than B, by about 5 times (although this is the maximum). I don't know of any other differences, i thought that you get a better range with B, but as it seems there is no difference in the ranges.
So i unplugged my modem, unwrapped the new Belkin, and plugged that in to my current set up. There wasn't much to set up, Just a power plug, the phoneline and a few network cables which connected the PCs.
Now i had to apply the ADSL settings from my provider to the modem router so it could connect to the internet. This is incredibly easy with the giant fold out guide, which walks you through the set up process to enable the modem to connect to the internet.
And that was it. Done. The PC's could all connect to the internet as normal. My brother came home and said it looked like something out of Stargate!
Now for the wireless part. The usb dongle comes with a driver cd, and this installs on windows xp perfectly fine. By default, the wireless on the modem is turned on, and so after the USB Dongle was installed, the wireless network was detected. After clicking to connect, i was able to go onto the internet wirelessly! i was so pleased at the ease of use and the speed it took me to get on! Going upstairs, the signal was excellent, and going to the far end of my house, which is about 25metres in length, i was still able to obtain a "Very good" signal.
And there we have it. An extremely simple to use and set up product to enable wireless networking and internet within the home, for a very good price. The fold out sheet contains extremly clear instructions and well labelled diagrams.
I fully recommend this product for anyone that wants a wireless network within the home. I have not had any problems with this product whatsoever. Its very lightweight but feels very robust, and looks it too! I paid £70 for mine, which is the average price. A modem router without wireless would cost about ten pounds less, so i feel it is worth spending that little bit extra, even if you don't already have wireless, its nice that the option is always there.
