The belkin wireless card allows you to connect to the internet and browse other computers on your home or office network without the need for cables.
The card is robust and has a good design, and the omni-directional screw-in antenna is handy and really a must for any wireless card. This is a 54g card, capable of sending and receiving data at speeds up to 54mbps, which is the max speed for modern 802.11g wireless networks.
Whereas there is no doubt that belkin make excellent networkingcomponents, this card follows that example but at the price of some frustration. The installation procedure requires you to install the software before putting the card into the pci slot. This can be very awkward if your computer is under a desk as you have to switch it off again, pull it out, open up the case and install it. You would expect it to be the other way around, but oh well.
Apart from that, nothbing else to complain about the card. The software that comes with this device is very good, and gives accurate information on link status, transmission speed and noise interference. It's handy so you can see when your aerial is in the best position. Talking of speeds, the one flaw with this card is that fact that the speed can vary dramatically with even the slightest touch. I've found the best position for the aerial is with it pointing straight ahead at an angle of 70 degrees. Counter to popular belief, pointing it in the direction of the router is NOT guarenteed to give the best signal.
Technical support is provided via a freephone number and in multiple language, however it is lacking in quality. You are asked to give your contact and product details every time, and there doesn't appear to be a very good call reference system, meaning you have to outline the entire situation all over again each time you call. Also, many of the staff appear not to have english as their primary language, making the need for you to speak slowly and repeat things several times. Also, they seem to not have very much extensive knowledge first hand, and I have often been told to 'wait whilst they check their database'. This is indeed a shame as their website support is very good, but as it's a free number for telephone support I can't suppose we can complain.
All in all, a very good card, if a bit fiddly. Maybe a USB wireless card might be better, but for the price of under £23.00 this PCI model is adequate.
