Real life sucks. Just when one thing seems sorted another knocks you sideways instead. Gah. Slowly getting back to grips on here but can they please stop changing things?

Since I recently moved from my old workplace in Harrogate to a new one in Lydd (don't worry I had no idea where it was either). I have a few new things to review. This is the first of my new technology reviews.
So as I like ciao, clearly I like the internet but the company I work for will not allow its staff to have phone lines put in to the staff accomodation as we're all on mobile contracts and can be moved at anytime, so getting online is something of a challenge when the accomoation is separate from the business building itself. But when the accomodation is in the same building as the business you can take advantage of the wi-fi put in for the use of the customers (soldiers, saliors, airmen). But my laptop is too old to have built in wireless networking, so i needed a usb adaptor to help me take advantage of the facilities avaliable.
After a quick search on amazon I found this device, it met all my criteria, cheap, and simple to use.
When it arrived (in a box far bigger than it needed) the adaptor itself and the instructions for it were apparently simple enough, so carefully following the instructions I insert the CD and follow the onscreen insructions. Plug in the device and .... Nothing. My laptop still insists on me using the start up wizard. Ok odd but after i do this it detects the device and the network, next everytime I try to connect to the internet my web browser won't let me, its trying to dial up, so after fiddling with the settings some more (no idea what I did or how I did it). I'm finally online. The most important thing seemed to be when I uninstalled the BT modem software from a couple of summers ago.
So currently the signal strength is 58%, it does occasionally get stronger but rarely lower, which is pretty good given that the signal is being recieved from the other side of 4 solid walls, on the rare occasion when i take the laptop in to the bar the signal strength is much better around 90% but the idea it is the area its meant to be used in. It tells me i have a transfer rate of 11 Mbits/sec, but i have no idea if this is any good , however the connection is fast enough for anything i want to do with the usual slowing at peak times though usually im working at these times so it doesnt affect me overly. For online gaming i suspect this wouldnt be quick enough but then i think that this is an issue with the signal not the adaptor.
The adaptor comes with a stand and extension which according to the instructions is for desktop pcs. However I've found it easier to use the stand with my laptop, as when I use it ,it's generally on my lap or bedside table, where moving it dislodges the adaptor from the usb port, using the stand means that the adaptor can sit on the table while the laptop is moved stopping the dislodging problem. The length of the extension is around 1m long. And hopefully in summer will mean i can take it outside with me (theres a picnic table outside my window for the use of the staff) if i put the adaptor on my window ledge.
The adaptor is about 1.5in, 0.5in wide and less the 0.25in thick.
It cost me £15.99 from amazon but can be bought for less on the marketplace.
Other people seem to have had problem with the adaptor but so far so good and believe me I have no idea how this kind of thing works, I like technology but don't like it being overly complicated.
