It seemed EVERYONE had gone wireless. Was I going to be left in the dark ages? Did I really want to send emails whilst mowing the lawn? YES was the answer - I WANTED IT BAD!
I decided on the Belkin after several recommendations from Family and friends. Even the nice man at PC World said it was good… well he would wouldn't he?
But having just decided on a new laptop I just had to have it. The sales guy at PC World was very good actually and talked me through the set-up and it seemed so straightforward. More about that later.
The cost was just under £70. Comparable to everything else I had seen in store. Obviously if you trawl the Internet stores and ebay you will be able to pick up a bargain, but I needed my hand held as this was new technology for me.
It really is an idiots guide set-up. If you follow the instructions on the quick start leaflet to the letter you will not have a problem. Even the guy in PC World said this. I decided I knew best and could not get the thing connected. I called it all the names under the sun. I was livid.
Then I remembered that my BT Internet Broadband log-in was 'slightly' different from my Primary Email Account. I changed the settings and it connected immediately!
What a fantastic piece of equipment and what a fine engineer the sales rep was….!
The Router comes in a box crammed with information. Listing even a free-phone telephone number and telling of a lifetime warranty and free technical support to go with the free-phone number!
The router is the size of a paperback book with two little aerials. I have mine downstairs, on the floor, behind a chair. Hardly the best location but it works superbly.
Installation is easy with the provided CD and the quick-start guide.
The spec states:
Range of 1500 feet (500 metres). 253 LAN users 32 WLAN users
You need:
Broadband Internet connection RJ45 (Ethernet connection) At least one computer with an installed network interface card, TCP/IP networking protocol installed on each computer MS Internet Explorer 4.0 or later or Netscape 4.0 or later.
Security is through a 26-character encryption…. WRITE IT DOWN! It is very long number to memorise. But keep it safe.
This protects your Internet connection from unwanted hackers.
I have never needed to use the help-line as I managed to dig myself out of my self-inflected mire!
To conclude the Belkin Wireless Route does everything I wanted and expected. It works in the bathroom, kitchen, loft and garden. For me - it's perfect!

Advantages: Lifetime warranty, free technical support (inc. freephone telephone number), easy to set up Disadvantages: Foreign call centre - not necessarily a disadvantage unless the person you speak to doesn't really understand you and you don't understand them!
