At last a computer product that does what it says it does and works the way it is supposed to!
I was sceptical to say the least about USB (universal serial bus) ports when they first started to appear on computer systems. Windows promised the era of ‘plug and play’ – the computer recognises the peripheral without major hardware configuration or software programming on the part of the end user. Now at last – it has happened. I recently bought a new computer, I bought a USB hub, I have plugged things into this magic little box – and there I am, up and running.
The Belkin Hub plugs into a USB socket on your computer. It is hot wired (you can plug it in and take it out while the computer is switched on, the main box recognises the hub. It can derive its power from the computer or through its own mains adapter. This hub has four sockets that allow the connection of four USB devices (there is a model that will accept seven). Hubs can also be daisy chained. Each socket has a green LED status light and there is also a red power LED.
It is a sleek little box (shaped like a small version of a portable CD player). It comes with interchangeable coloured sleeves (grey, red, green, blue orange) that will colour co-ordinate with your Apple Mac. Yes - Apple Mac - don't worry though, this box is perfectly compatible with your PC. It is compatible with Windows 95 revision B and higher. It comes with a 1.8 metre connector cable. I have used these hubs on Windows ME and XP. My home machine is built into a housing under my desk and its USB ports are, of course, on the back. Having a USB port on the desk top, offering four more USB ports and permanently connected via a hole in the top of the desk, is simplicity itself.
I had no problem plugging in a digital camera and photo quality printer from scratch. Indeed I had my first photographs printed out within ten minutes.
Transmission speeds can be as high as 12 Mbps. Belkin also produce a whole range of cables to link other devices to a USB port. I could consider moving my parallel printer onto the hub.
Let’s see, the manual says you can plug in any USB device: mouse, keyboard, joystick, even another USB hub. What’s this? You can daisy chain up to 127 USB devices into one PC USB port?
Right, how about .. A scanner? …. An internet camera? ……. A CD writer? …….. A Region 1 DVD-CDROM? ………... A coffee percolator? …………. Automated dog walker? …..
