...Belkin - a name you can trust for quality hardware. That is enough justification for me, having struggled for ages (and failed miserably) to get the USB ports on my motherboard to work reliably (VIA Chipset - yuk!).
So, I head straight for the shops to find a plug-and-play USBcard so that I can add some working ports to my PC, and connect up my new digital camera without messing about with serial communications errors.
Belkin seemed to have the answer, this four port USBcard that plugs into one of my motherboard's spare PCI slots. As a bonus, it also claims to support the new USB2.0 standard. Not that I need version 2.0 just yet, but it always pays to be ahead of the game if you can afford it.
So the box arrives, and I eagerly unpack it - only to find that Belkin have pulled a rather mean trick. They haven't written the USB2.0...

...the case of your pc and slide this card into a spare PCI2.1 slot. It's a good idea to purchase an earthing lead that attaches to your wrist before handling and installing the card. Once installed, the card comes with a cd of drivers which you install when prompted on start up of your pc.
One of the great things about Belkin products is that they have free technical support, so if you get stuck, a friendly technician is a phone call away, but this really should not be necessary.
One word of warning, do check that your computer manufacturer that your PCI slots are 2.1. On older pcs without 2.1 slots, the card simply will not install and work.
The card works with 1.1 devices however....

...There are a huge number of PCI WiFi cards out there, so it's often hard to tell which are the better buys; the better value, the better quality and the better functionality. Does the Belkin 54Mbps Wireless PCIcard
The first, and probably only advantage of this wireless adapter is the fact that it has a PCI interface rather than USB2.0. This means less clutter on your PC desk, more free ports, and normally means a higher quality product. It supports 802.11b and g, so there are few issues of network compatibility, except security, which I'll come on to. Unfortunately, the device does not deal well with obstacles of many kinds. Walls, pipes in walls, microwaves and halogen lightbulbs cause a drop in performance; noticeably more than in other similar devices. Even without such barriers, it still occassionally cuts out.
