DON'T BOTHER IF YOU HAVE VISTA!
I wish I'd read the reviews of this product before I bought, I usually do when purchasing new computer components but for some reason didn't this time... More fool me.
Firstly it looks cool, if a little on the large side. The instructions are straight-forward and easy to follow, and software installation seemed to be a breeze, after that it all went a bit pear-shaped.
Firstly plugging the adaptor in when prompted at the end of the software installation didn't work, the adaptor isn't found by windows. Ok, so reboot the computer, plug the adaptor in again and this time we have LED action, and windows recognises it and activates the driver. Great, now to connect. Ok, so the Belkin Wireless utility doesn't work, hmm, try the network icon in the system tray. Choose the relevant network, type in the security key - 'Connecting is taking longer than usual'. No IP address is assigned....
And I am trying to connect this to a BELKIN N1 ROUTER!!
Now after checking online I discover there is no certified release software as yet for Vista, only a pre-release beta that you 'install and use at your own risk' - WHY? How long has Vista been out now? Why release a product that isn't tested properly?
Anyway, to cut a long annoying story short I discovered that it doesn't like WPA security, so am using WEP to connect successfully, and have just discovered the well documented problem with audio playback skipping BADLY in Vista whilst the N1 adaptor is being used. Speed-wise everything seemed okay, although of course the manufacturers claims about absolute speed and range on the packaging and marketing are offset by their very own disclaimers written in small print.
I've had to mark this product down as everything about it has been a pain in the proverbial to me so far.
So to conclude, I'm presuming that these problems are exclusive to Vista as I don't have an XP machine to try it on any more, but it is therefore USELESS for what I need it for until Belkin pull their fingers out and sort out some Vista drivers that fix the rather serious bugs present.
Advantages: works first time, gets you out of a tight spot! Disadvantages: bigger than it looks on the box
...new "study".
Cue the Belkin N1 Wireless USB adapter, or F5D8051uk, PCN 7-22868-60657-5. Peeling the shrink-wrap off the box revealed the typical Belkin silver "open here" arrow on the carton inside the sleeve, and a very easily-read 1-sheet "how to get you going" instruction leaflet.
"First Insert the CD into the PC", and follow the prompts... A couple of Next's and the setup program told me to plug the USB cable on the cradle into the PC, then ... ...Pretty much straight-off, the Belkin client software popped-up and let me key in the SSID I use (don't want to make it too easy for the neighbours!), and it detected and latched onto the wall-mounted wireless modem router hanging on the wall back in the "studio" as easily as you please. The Dell PC was returned to its space on the floor, under the desk, and the USB adapter was positioned on the edge of the bookshelf housing our eye-level inkjet printer ...

This adaptor is also a problem with the Windows XP , does not like to connect only does iso when it feels like it, it also keeps dropping out when in use, it looks smart but that's all you can say, I have had to revert back to Netgear for peace of mind and contentment.
