Manufacturer's product description
The 1X8 KVM Switch from Belkin allows control up to 8 servers from one consoles and is expandable to control up to 248 servers from up to four consoles. Using the most advanced technology to the KVM market in the patent-pending, quad-bus technology, this innovation lets four server administrators simultaneously control up to 248 computers in a daisy-chain configuration (maximum of 16). Complete your KVM solution with the high-performance connections you need. With a 60% reduction in size, the proprietary cabling technology offers easy cable management and cable bulk reduction. Supporting a high-quality resolution of up to 2048x1536@85Hz through a 400MHz bandwidth for all daisy-chained KVM switches. Belkin innovation brings another key advantage in the powerful yet easy-to-use IntelliView Graphical On-Screen Display (OSD). Based on a Windows operating system design, IntelliView allows the administrator to name, group, sort, or select the connected servers or server groups from the keyboard or mouse. IntelliView enables administrators to group servers together, and to assign three levels of security rights to user groups.

Advantages: Quick and easy to set up Disadvantages: Video may get interference
...I've had this KVMswitch for a number of years now, since my previous one only had two ports. I found this one fairly cheap somewhere. You're supplied with all the VGA and PS2 cables for each of the 4 connections. You can then plug these cables into your computers. The button on the top allows for quick switching.
But as well as using the button for switching between computers, you are also able to use keyboard shortcuts. These are pretty common in KVMswitches, and belkin manage to do it the same way as everyone else. Great for people that are already used to using a KVMswitch. The KVMswitch has a useful beep, which can be helpful to understand when a command was received by the switch.
The switch also has a port for plugging in power. This helps improve the quality of the picture as there is more power behind it. Most of the time...

Advantages: Cheap, Supports PS/2, Doesn't need a Power Supply Disadvantages: Cable layout, Flimsy Construction
.... In use, 1600x1200 resolution comes through the switch without any appreciable ghosting or distortion. Everything below that works fine as well but I didn't try any higher resolutions.
Installation is a doddle. There are no drivers to install, no software to be loaded. All you need to do is plug the Keyboard, Video & MOuse sockets of your various PCs into the switch using the cables provided. Your PCs will not know the difference between this switch and a real keyboard, video and mouse. What you do need are the cables. The unit comes with two sets of cables (you need a keyboard, video and mouse cable for each PC you want to connect) - which is quite stingy considering it's a 4-portswitch. Of course, Belkin do sell additional sets so I suppose it at least means that you can buy these as you need them rather than have to buy all 4 at once.
So...

Advantages: Allows 4 PCs to share one Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor Disadvantages: Switching regularly can be a pain. PS2 Only
...In my job I use a lot of PCs. I have 3 main PC's, and a further 7 tied to my desk. I use at least 3 different operating systems, on 4 different models of PC, from 2 different manufacturers. I also like having a large monitor, preferably 19" or 21" minimum. Now how do you get three PC's, three 21" Monitors, three keyboards and three mice onto a desk no bigger than a kitchen breakfast bar?
The answer is simple: You don't.
What you do is invest in something like this Belkin Omniview E-Series 4-portKVMSwitch, which provides the ability to use a single monitor, keyboard and mouse on up to 4 PCs.
The BelkinOmniView I have been provided with did not come with connection cables, so make sure that if you are getting one of these, you cost in the price of cables to each of the PCs on your desk. Once I had got the necessary cables, I...
