Have you ever been sitting there, comfortably surfing away on the Internet? Or been engrossed in playing your favourite game on your computer, only for a flash of lightning to flash across your window?
If so, what’s the first thought that comes to mind? Well, mine is, or should I say was, “Crap, I better turn my computer off, I don’t want the bloody thing getting destroyed by a surge caused by the lightning”.
So why did I say WAS, well I don’t need to worry anymore, as I have recently purchased a “Belkin under Monitor Surge Protector” (Model number F5C100u4-A), meaning I don’t have to worry about those dreaded Lightning strikes or even a more common Power surge.
So what exactly is a Belkin under Monitor Surge Protector?
Well, its actually a piece of equipment you can buy, that will take any Lightning strikes or Power surges on the chin, in other words, it will sacrifice itself, rather than ruining you beloved computer, and what’s more, the company that makes them promises to compensate you with up to £40,000 damages should the thing not work (although there are strong guidelines, to which I’ll explain later) or if it’s just the Surge Protector itself that gets damaged, they’ll send you a brand new one out, now that’s confidence for you.
The unit has five main sockets, plus a spare one, which can be used even if your unit is switched off (although it must be plugged in) and there is also the capability to connect your modem via the unit, thus giving that the same protection.
The unit itself is said to take a maximum spike Amperage of 33,000 Amps, so in other words, it would take a surge of over 33,000 Amps to damage your unit, and despite not being an expert on these things, it sure sounds a mighty power surge.
Come on tell me more; OK, not only is useful for protecting your beloved computer, it is also handy in keeping your room tidy and to stop you having wires draping around everywhere, you see, all your plugs connect via the sockets at the back of the unit, and in the front there are switches so you can turn your computer or peripherals off nice and easy. It also sits nice and easy under your monitor, which helps with the tidiness side of things.
So how much are they?
Well, there are actually quite a few different versions, which have different characteristics, i.e. amount of sockets, under monitor, etc. Mine is the Under Monitor version, and it cost me £38.00 plus P&P (just under £43 in total) from QVC, they can probably be found for less somewhere on the Internet.
What about these warranty guidelines?
Well, as you can expect, they can’t just give any Tom, Dick or Harry the compensation, firstly, you have to have all receipts for any equipment that is damaged and that you are claiming for, plus there are things like, making sure you are running the unit directly from the wall-sockets, in other words, don’t have it plug into any plug extensions of two/three-way sockets, if you are doing this, then your warranty instantly becomes invalid and you won’t get a penny back.
Features:
Maximum Spike Amperage (33,000 Amps) £40,000 Connected Equipment Warranty 5 individually switched surge protected sockets, and one main switch controls all the other switches. Block Space allows room for large adapters 4-metre (13.12ft) heavy-duty power cord Internet Ready Telephone/Fax/Modem protection Surge protected light indicates protection is fully functional Earth indicator light lets you know the socket is properly earthed 1.8-metre (6ft) meter telephone cord Electro Magnetic Interference/Radio Frequency Interference filtering for clean power
Audible Alarm:
Should your unit become damaged or not be working properly, there is even an Audible Alarm to let you know, if you hear this, immediately stop using the unit and phone the company up.
So there you have it, an excellent piece of equipment that not only allows you to carry on with your enjoyment whilst the lightning flashes across the sky, but also the safe knowledge, that should anything strike your Electricity/Telephone supply, you are protected and even if you do have this misfortune of the unit failing (which is hardly likely) then the company will compensate you for up to £40,000 worth of damage, WOW, £40,000, that would have to be some bloody computer, don’t you think?
Advantages: Eight outlets, Lifetime warranty, Protects phone/TV too Disadvantages: None
...a mere £30 on the Belkin SurgeMaster 8-way surge protector.
One of the best things about this piece of kit is that right from the start it offers reassurance that your precious PC and other electrical stuff is safe. On the box there is a large sign saying “£40,000 connected equipment warranty”. This is quite simply excellent. On closer inspection this means that anything that is connected to the unit and is damaged as a result of a power surge will ... ...then stop right there – Belkin supply a wire of medium length with the unit. As well as phone lines, TV signals from coaxial/aerial cable are protected by the unit too. Just use the supplied wire to go from the socket on the wall to the unit, and then plug in your TV card to the output on the unit. It really couldn’t be simpler.
On the back of the box is a diagram of the inside of the protector to show you how it works. Basically, it is full of ...

Several months ago London was hit by one of the worst thunder storms I or it could recall. To cut a long story short our house was actually struck by lightning, were not sure whether it was through the phone line or through the Sky Dish, but anyway we lost virtually all our electrical goods, including - DVD Player, TV, Phone, Skybox, Maby Monitors, External Modem, Amplifier etc etc, pretty much anything that was plugged in, was on standby or was ... ...writing this review was that the only thing completely saved was the computer and monitor and a few things - these were the only things in the house plugged into an 8-Way SurgeMaster.
Fortunately we were covered by insurance and miraculously were covered by lightning strike.
Needless to say, we bought several other SurgeMasters and the house is now fully protected. just in case.
Another point to make is that electrical goods should not be left ...

High voltages are alwas lethal, and you're computer is just as vunerable as you.
Get Protected!
A surge protector is a must for any home or office computer user, as not only can the high voltages from a power spike or surge kill you're computer they can pass on to you!.
I think the BelkinSurgeMaster should be the stardard when it comes to protection. As it is affordable, well designed, and packs all the nessary features to protect your equipment.
I personally like the way all the outlets are well spaced out, it gives it the ability to have those large printer / scanner power supplies into it, without having to sacrifice the outlets next to it.
The device also features protection on the phone line and the antenna, which is useful for those of you out there who own a media center computer with a TV card.
Another feature ...
Advantages: Protects your PC from power surges and your data from brief interruptions Disadvantages: Rather heavy and bulky
If you are anything like me and live an area where your power supply sometimes get interrupted you will know the frustration of losing a document on your PC through no fault of your own. I live in a rural area so power cuts are something I have grown used to, but wherever you live it can happen and it is really annoying to find you have lost something you were working on.
The BelkinSurgeMaster Superior Series Emergency Battery Backup has a very long name but what it does is actually very straightforward indeed. It has two banks of three sockets set along the top of what looks like a standard surge protector strip. On one side that is exactly what you get - three surge protector sockets. On the other side are three sockets which provide a limited amount of battery back up to the sockets. These will give you just enough time to ...

The features included with the BelkinSurgeMaster, especially the Gold Series, is endless. These features include an unlimited equipment and data recovery warranty. The product also features a 360 degree plug which allows you to get big ?brick? transformers to fit on the bar without touching the other items plugged in. The protector also has connections for Ethernet, co-axial (a/v) connections, and standard television. Two LEDs indicate whether power is being provided to the bar and whether items connected are being protected. Beside these LEDs there is a master switch which disables the SurgeMaster without turning off at the socket. This can be particularly useful when the power outlet is out of reach. The product also features technology which completely silences the protection mechanisms by reducing the volume ...
