Just before Christmas one of my customers rang me up with a problem which he hoped I could solve for him.
A couple of months earlier I have installed a wireless network for him. His home office was in an extension to the main house and he had two computers on desks about ten feet apart.
The network I installed was very simple, I replaced his existing ADSL modem with a Belkin Wireless G Router/Modem which I connected via CAT5 cable to the network port on his PC - the router/modem sat comfortably on a shelf next to his desk.
I set up a Security Key for the network to ensure that no-one within range of the network would be able to access it without authorisation.
I installed a Belkin USB Wireless G Network Adaptor into the second PC and set up the Network Security Key to enable unrestricted access for this PC.
Network installation complete, Windows set up, Access to the Internet tested, E-mails checked both ways. The network worked very well and at good connection rates (as expected the PCs only being ten feet apart.
So far so good. The client then wanted his notebook computer (which already had wireless network connectivity installed) to connect to the Internet via the new wireless network - no problem. Set up the Security Key on the notebook and job done. We moved the notebook around the house in the adjacent rooms and found that connection from the notebook was good in all locations - signal strength ranged from good to excellent, connection speed varied between 24mbs and 36mbs.
Then the fun really started. The client wanted to share Internet access with his son's computers. I(two additional computers on the first floor of the house, one at each end of the building)
The first of the two upstairs computers connected straight away, I had installed Belkin USB Wireless G Network Adaptors in each PC, but the signal strngth was low and connection kept dropping. The situation was even worse in the second bedroom as the PC refused to connect at all and a signal could not be detected.
After some research I decided to install a Belkin Wireless G Universal Range Extender/Access Point - I had not previously tried out this product but the specification looked good and the features were exactly what I was looking for - according to the manufacturer...
'The Wireless G Universal Range Extender increases the coverage of your existing wireless network by retransmitting an 802.11b/g signal across a wider coverage area. Designed for easy setup operation, it works seamlessly with most routers and access points, with the push of a button. When used in access-point mode and connected to a wired router, the Range Extender adds wireless capability to an existing network. This allows you to expand Internet access throughout a home or small offi ce without running cumbersome Ethernet cables between computers'
I have to say that the unit was very easy to set up. It comes with an installation sheet which is very easy to follow and as I wanted to use the unit as a range extender rather than as an access point, there was no need to install any software.
Installation was simply a matter of connecting the unit to the mains, positioning it next to the router/modem and pressing the search button. The scan LED glows red for awhile until it locates the signal from the router/modem at which stage it turns green.
The router/modem having then been linked to the range extender, it was a simple job to move the unit into the hallway and find the position at which the light stayed green, fortunately the client had several mains sockets in the hallway so positioning the unit was very easy.
Once positioned, the two PCs upstairs were tested again and both connected to the network without any problem, signal strength in both cases was good, and connection speed between 24mbs and 36mbs.
I am happy to recommend this product as I found it very easy to install and it did the job it was bought to do, and it did that job very well.
The main specification of this unit is as follows...
Form Factor: External Connectivity Technology: Wireless Data Link Protocol: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g Compliant Standards: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g Data Transfer Rate: 54 Mbps Encryption Algorithm: 128-bit WEP, 64-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2 Frequency Band: 2.4 GHz
The unit comes with a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer and 24/7 service support via the Internet.
I paid just over £32 plus P&P from Savastore and the unit arrived within three days of placing the order.

Advantages: cheap, reliable Disadvantages: confusing set up
This product is for extending the wireless range of an exisiting network. It simply repeats the previous signal to expand the range, and can be located anywhere to maximise this. It has a 54mbps speed, and wont broadcast your original speed, eg 108mbps.
I orderd the WURE (wireless universal range extender) from broadbandstuff.co.uk for £39. When the product arrived I was quite impressed with the appearance. The instructions were fairly comprehensive ... ...the WURE. I followed them but encountered a problem when it came to getting the product to work with my netgear routers WPA security. The instructions failed to mention how to do this. All you have to do is put your settings in the basic wireless settings, not in the repeater menu.
When this problem was overcome the set up was easy, I simply moved the WURE to an area of low signal and it did its job well. The connection occasionaly drops but in ...

Quick review of Belkin Wireless G Universal Range Extender/Access Point
I used this an an extender and initially it was a nightmare to set up until I realised the setup needs Internet Explorer as the browser - I was using Firefox. Alas although it connected to my wireless network (and several neighbours') and extended the range, it proved very slow on throughput (about 25%) but that may be because I can only site it at a point where reception of the main access point is bad. ...

Advantages: fast connection speed, reliable Disadvantages: setting up
In my opinion Belkin routers are the best make. It supplys a good streanth of wireless internet signal arround my home and the signal, very rarely breaks up.Like many other routers. It can be quite hard to set up but the instruction manual helps. On the back there a about four or five ports one connects to your internet supply cable and the others allow you to connect cables to other pcs or laptops which do not have the wireless feature. The internet ... ...speed to a large extent. Once it has been set up you have no more work to do and it is very easy to use . It is quite cheap roughly about £30 to £40. If you have a laptop which you need to use around the home and yet connect to the internet this is the router for you. ...
