Mashallah! Bint Arab!

Advantages: Detailed account of a phenomenal person. Great adventure story.
Disadvantages: None

littered with letters and journals and official reports in Gertrude's own words, as framed around them. This was Howell's deliberate plan: to give Miss Bell a platform. The result is a breath-taking insight. Howell compares the personal diaries with the public ones. In her later years Gertrude started to keep an official diary (she'd become famous in her own right, and knew many of her words would subsequently be published) and a private one for her confidant. The divergences between the two are the clearest repost to those of her day, who found her unfeminine. Under all her bravado, Gertrude Bell was a fragile and vulnerable as any woman. Contrariwise from her earliest days of wandering, her letters home paint one picture, while official records suggest an entirely different scenario. Fragile perhaps, but it was a tough ...

Very good summary of and introduction to autism spectrum disorder

Advantages: Broad range of topics covered, very easy to read
Disadvantages: Little detail on some areas because of the broad range of topics covered

I work with and have a fair bit of experience with individuals on the autism spectrum. I have a fairly good working knowledge of the area, but am very lacking in specifics and in day-to-day applications. This book is primarily aimed at parents, but I would recommend it to anyone with a profssional interest as well. The book offers a very good introduction to what autism spectrum disorders are, their prevalence and how diagnoses are made. It's packed with tips about where to go for extra information, be that for finacial, emotional or educational support for parents, or for more detailed accounts. I found te book very accessible. It manages to give a good grounding without seeming patronising. It doesn't assume any prior knowledge, nor does it over-simplify. A very wide range of topics is covered in the book. I like this as I found ...

Review of Autism Spectrum Disorders - Chantal Sicile-Kira

Not Bow-led over.

Advantages: Interesting details about Mongol culture
Disadvantages: Not engaging enough as a story

"Lords of the Bow" is the second in the Conqueror series based on the life of Genghis Khan by Conn Iggulden. Iggulden is the author of the popular Emperor series which was based on the life of Julius Caesar. Although full of historical inaccuracies( which Iggulden himself admits) this series has been well received. Having read the Emperor series previously I was looking forward to the new series on Genghis Khan as I did not know much about him. Genghis Khan is famous for uniting the nomadic tribes of the Mongols and attacking the Chin Empire. He led many campaigns across Central Asia and his empire was substantial by the time of his death in 1227. His descendants, including Kublai Khan, cemented and added to this empire impressively. The first in this series " Wolf of the Plains" dealt with Genghis's childhood and the death of his ...
