"The count returned to making metal, finally!"

Varg vikernes is a name that many people associate with murder, racism/nazism and other forms of politically incorrect gestures, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a brilliant musician. After paying for his crime, Belus is here, a long awaited new metal release from Burzum.

Belus is a continuation of Filosofem which was his latest metal album, before changing musical style to ambient. His way of composing repetitive, atmospheric, and simplistic guitar riffs remind me more of how underground house/techno artists build up their music. But don't let that demotivate you to listen to Belus, this is a masterpiece of high quality, unique metal music that brings you through a journey into to a musical world of nature mysticism.

Belus død is a rearranged metal version of the ambient song Daudi Baldrs, which really brought the song to a new dimension. Changing from a dull, minimalist synth version to a spiced up metal version was a great decision. Thumbs up to Varg on this one.

What differ Belus from previous albums are Varg's choice of vocal style. What used to be shrieking painful, high pitched screams now turned into a combo of growls with tiny amounts of clean vocals.

The music is mostly downtempo eerie, and sad landscapes of black metal inspired riffs. But a song that really stand out from the rest is "Kalmadaithas nedstigning". Thrash metal based riffs with a mid tempo middle part, and repeated talking voice in norwegian.

In my opinion, Burzum does a great comeback and I strongly recommend you to give this album more than one listening, it will continue to grow as you listen to it more and more.

Overall, Belus is a great concept album. A must for those who love melancholic, atmospheric, mesmerizing, hypnotic and unique metal music. Belus contains mixed material, written at different times in his entire musical career.

In conclusion: Set your prejudice aside, focus on the music, and enjoy Belus.
