Ben and Jerry's are having a 'Free Cone Day' today (Tuesday 25th April), but this year the Manchester outlets aren't included. To make up for the disappointment, I treated myself to some anyway, just having to pay money for it instead.

Cookie Dough is one of my favourite sweet snack foods. When I bake cookies myself I have a tendency to eat half the dough when it's still raw. In America you can now actually buy pre-mixed cookie dough specifically designed to be eaten as it is, not baked. Yum. Unfortunately this ice cream is not 100% cookie dough, but it's still good.

Ben and Jerry's Cookie Dough Ice Cream has 3 main parts:

- Vanilla ice cream which tastes silky and pure, and has a good, strong vanilla bean flavour, not at all artificial like cheaper brands tend to be. The biggest part of this product is the vanilla ice cream, but though some people find this a boring flavour, I think it is complemented well by the other ingredients.

- Cookie dough chunks which are generous in size and in quantity. They are solid and chewy, especially when coming straight from the freezer, and sometimes seem to have a vague peanutty taste. The cookie dough is not especially smooth once it has been frozen and only slightly defrosted, but the lumps are small so do not detract from the overall experience.

- Chocolate chips which are usually attached to the cookie dough (though sometimes break free) and which are small but plentiful. These are chipped from dark chocolate so have a slightly bitter taste, but are delicious when combined with the slightly salty dough.

I like the ice cream because of the mix of flavours (a bit sweet, a bit salty, a bit bitter), but also because of the range of textures. The ice cream is smooth, the chocolate chips solid and the cookie dough chewy. This makes it an ice cream that you have to bite into a little bit, rather than slurp away at, but also means I feel fuller afterwards because my body has registered that I've been eating something.

The look of the ice cream is less interesting - the vanilla ice cream is a rich, creamy yellow colour, but the chocolate chips look dull, and the cookie dough often has a gray tinge to it. In other words, it's not the most appealing ice cream to look at, but it does taste good. The guy who ran the Lindt chocolate appreciation evening I attended in Sydney claimed that good quality chocolate is shiny and glossy, and that only badly tempered chocolate has a dull surface. Therefore, you could assume that the chocolate they use for this ice cream isn't top notch - but then should it really be? I think it might be a waste to use the best stuff in such small quantities, mixed into a frozen product that is predominately flavoured by other ingredients. The chocolate used here looks and tastes chocolatey, which is all you can really ask for in this sort of item.

The Ben and Jerry's range, now owned by Unilever, has recently launched a new pot size (150ml) and are trialling it on just a few flavours. One of these is Cookie Dough which I think is a reflection of its popularity. It's a nice ice cream because it has an interesting flavour, and because it doesn't need an additional sauce or topping to make it special. In fact, the hot fudge, cream and sprinkles you get when you go to one of their scoop shops takes the flavour a bit over the top for me, making it sickly. It's therefore an easy flavour to have in the house, because it's all you need for a tasty, no-nonsense dish of ice cream.

My only real complaint, applying to all flavours in the range, concerns the tubs the ice cream comes in. These are papery and, at times, flimsy. The 500ml size is fine, because you generally scoop some ice cream out of it into a bowl (unless you're being very greedy). The smallest tubs - the 100ml ones - are also fine because they are designed to be eaten out of (with a tiny plastic spoon, no less) and so appear to be a bit sturdier. The problem lies with the new size, which at 150ml is still only a single serving. Because of this fact I attempted to eat straight from the tub, but it wasn't easy. The paper outer coating was quite easy to crush, especially when digging hard into ice cream that was still a bit frozen. It also didn't allow the ice cream to defrost evenly at the same time, meaning I had to eat round in circles, working my way in from the edge, to ensure I only ate bits once they were sufficiently defrosted. Because of the way their manufacturing plant works, the majority of chunks do seem to end up not being in the outer 1cm of the tub, which is much more noticeable in a tub of this size. I ended up eating a lot of vanilla-heavy, cookie dough-light ice cream, followed by a lot of dough-rich, vanilla-light mouthfuls. Another problem with the smaller tubs is the way they ice up if not stored properly. This is something you cannot tell until you open the tub, by which point I can't often be bothered to return to the shop. With bigger tubs this is less of a problem as the top layer is a much smaller percentage of the total product, and so you don't mind so much scraping it off, or mixing in the icicles.

Ben and Jerry's is available in most supermarkets, and branches of Blockbuster video always seem to have an excellent selection. Offers are common - the Londis near me currently has a "2 tubs for £5" deal on, and my medium tubs were "2 for £2.50" at Blockbuster, which is much cheaper than the equivalent amount at a scoop shop. Typically it's an expensive product when not on offer (up to £5 / £6 per large tub in some places) but it tastes so much nicer than cheaper brands that it's worth investing in as a treat, even if that means you end up eating ice cream less often.

Digging for the dough
Review of Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream by Delicate_Orchid

Advantages: It has cookie dough!!!
Disadvantages: It does not have enough cookie dough!!!

...of the reasons I prefer Ben & Jerry's cookie dough ice cream to the Haagen Dasz version is because the pot is easier to open. The Haagen Dasz pot comes with a plastic lid which is incredibly hard to pull off. With Ben & Jerry's, the moment you open the pot, you can start digging for the gold. I always eat my ice cream straight from the tub with a spoon. This saves washing the dishes and also makes the 'digging experience' so much more fun! I start ...
...of the vanilla ice cream, because it is a tad boring compared to the dough bits contained within it. But I suppose you cannot fault Ben & Jerry's. After all, they are in the ice cream making business, not the cookie dough making business! ***Further info*** www.benandjerrys.co.uk/ ... Read review

If They Won't Pun, Neither Will I
Review of Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream by jillmurphy

Advantages: The chocolate chips and the cookie dough!
Disadvantages: Ice cream too hard and too sweet.

...Four one-scoop, 100ml pots of Ben & Jerry's later, we felt much better, but not as much better as we'd hoped. Cookie Dough is one of Ben & Jerry's most popular lines. Before we bought an ice cream maker, Kieran and I ate tons of it. It has a vanilla base with chocolate chips and chunks of raw cookie dough mixed in. This way of serving ice cream is very popular in the United States, but a relative newcomer to the more staid UK ice cream market. Haagen ...
...mix could there be? Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream is a very pale, nicely creamy affair. It's not what you'd call soft scoop, though, and I think you'd need to take it from the freezer for at least ten minutes before you tried to eat it. Flavours are muted at cold temperatures, especially in ice creams, and especially in ice creams whose formulations are a little too hard. Kieran and I opened our little one-person pots as soon as we left the shop, ... Read review

COOKIE DOUGH MONSTER STRIKES AGAIN
Review of Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream by glitterprincess

Advantages: Scrumptious, creamy, heavenly
Disadvantages: fattening & the cookie dough chunks can be a tad dry

...I either have Ben & Jerry's or Haagen Daaz & I'm not at all fussed which one. My fave Ben & Jerry ice cream of the moment is The Full Vermonty, but I couldn't find that flavour the last time we went to get a film so I had to force myself (oh, it was hard ..) to get the Cookie Dough. I'm sinful in a double way when I eat this yummy stuff, because I've got quite an intolerance to dairy products. So not only does it expand my waistline due to the calorific ...
...stories that some of the Ben & Jerry's tubs have on them about where they got the idea for the name of the ice cream etc, but as I said the packaging for this flavour unfortunately isn't all that exciting. You can have a look at their site for more fun & frolics at www.benjerry.co.uk *~ Smell & Taste ~* When you open the lid, the smell of the ice cream certainly isn't over powering but there is a delicate, sweet vanilla scent. Definitely appealing. ... Read review

Dough! I ate too much
Review of Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream by ang_2906

Advantages: tastes gorgeous
Disadvantages: expensive

...you'll no doubt know that Ben and Jerry's is half price in Tesco at the moment at £1.89 instead of around the £3.99 mark. This in itself persuaded me to buy a tub of ice cream that i would normally walk past very quickly, as the tubs are so small I can never usually justify the guilt of buying something that wont last me very long. Cookie Dough flavour is basically vanilla ice cream with chunks of chocolate chips and pieces of uncooked dough hidden ...
...behind this flavour according to the B+J website is that apparently Americans like uncooked dough more than they like the cookies after being cooked. It's been made since 1986 and was the first ever cookie dough ice cream! My tub of 500ml looks very tiny and I know it's not going to last me too long in the freezer. The tub, made out of cardboard which upon a little bit of research I found that its made of 90% renewable paper stock coated to stop ... Read review

Heaven is Expensive
Review of Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream by NoLogoGirl

Advantages: Creamy, Lottsa Chunks
Disadvantages: Heaven is expensive

...the ice cream kingdom. Ben and Jerry's without a doubt has the coolest names; and what's in the carton usually lives up to the creative titles. Haagen Daaz does not have such imaginative names for their flavours, but they serve up quality all of the time. My favourite all time flavour is Chocolate Chip cookie dough. So I put the ice cream brands of the globe to a test and Ben and Jerry's comes out as the champion of the world. There are round chucks ...
...the serving and there are actually chocolate chips in the dough. It tastes as though you could actually pull out the chunks, put them on a tray and bake little cookies (not a bad idea actually!!). The ice cream itself is vanilla, but ooooooooh, you have never had vanilla like this. It is so creamy that you have to lick your lips after every spoonful. And the problem is that it disappears so fast... even when I'm the only one eating it. This kind ... Read review

Reviews which might be of interest for Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream
I'm no big softy..
Review of Fox's Big Softies by  indiegirl

Advantages: 97% fat free, chocolate(always an advantage!), a nice sized snack
Disadvantages: When did cookies taste unbaked?

...teeth sunk into what tasted like uncooked cookie dough. In a tub of Ben and Jerry's choc chip cookie dough ice cream, the cookie dough taste works. As a 'chocolate bite' snack that's got anything but a bite, it doesn't. Add to this the flavour of what Fox's promise us to be 'real chocolate' (which I have to say tasted anything but), and you end up with a gooey mess in your mouth which leaves a very bitter chocolate aftertaste. All in all not a very nice experience. I'm not sure if I can lay the blame on any particular aspect of the snack, but for me, the whole combination just didn't work! I also got a little confused at the nutrition and ingredient details. They're listed per 100g, and per biscuit. Now either Fox's were expecting everyone to do what I did and take one taste and bin the remainder, or they were trying to be clever... Read review
