Wasn't it a scorcher yesterday?
Y'know, that's the good thing about the Scottish climate: we get a belter of a day, turn a little pink and tender (and acquire a little more carcinogenicity), then rise the next morning to 97% cloud-cover...gale-force winds...and a chill-factor of -75°. Aye, ... Read review
Advantages: Delicious caramel Disadvantages: None, unless you don't like caramel
...We indulged ourselves with some BEN & JERRY'S CARAMEL CHOO-CHOO.
The caramel-flavoured ice cream is a pale golden colour (not unlike ordinary vanilla flavour), with swirls of soft and creamy caramel surrounding lumps of harder caramel which are covered in chocolate. As for the chocolate lumps, well the chocolate is quite crisp and tasty, and it goes really well with the caramel filling.
In fact, the crispy chocolate coating combined with the filling blends beautifully with the gooey swirls, and the whole lot is balanced by the subtler flavour of the ice cream base.

Aye, we're so bloomin' lucky up here. Not for us the boring day-after-day ritual of desperately trying to cool down, or just plain avoiding the burning rays from the big ball of fire in the sky. The endless crates of chilled beer...the pure, unadulterated, decadent pleasure of gobbling humongous spoonfuls of frozen desserts... *sigh*
But looking on the bright side, think of the money saved by doing without those chill-inducing pleasures. No need for ice cream in frozen Jocko-land today - well not around chez proxam, at least.
Where was I? Oh yes, it was a scorcher yesterday. And what better way to chill-out than scoffing some ice-cream...which is what we did. We indulged ourselves with some BEN & JERRY'S CARAMEL CHOO-CHOO. The caramel-flavoured ice cream is a pale golden colour (not unlike ordinary vanilla flavour), with swirls of soft and creamy caramel surrounding lumps of harder caramel which are covered in chocolate. So, that's caramel ice cream with swirls of soft caramel and lumps of hard caramel. If you don't like caramel, probably best to stop reading right now!
The ice cream part is quite delicately flavoured - not too sickly sweet as caramel can sometimes be, although the swirly, soft stuff is just a little cloying. Very nice.
The texture and quality of the ice cream is, as you'd expect from B&J, of the highest order and it's all to easy to scoop out huge dollops of this stuff - but don't worry as it's a whopping 85% fat free! (Just do what I do, and leave about 20% in the bottom of the tub - it's what I call the miracle diet - it'll be a miracle if you lose any weight). You can find all the nutritional information on the tub so I won't bother here, but suffice to say, it's not health food.
It's available in all the major supermarket chains (and elsewhere), I think we paid around £3.65 in Asda.
In conclusion, I'd recommend B&J's Caramel Choo Choo. It's not too fussy, it's not too sweet and sickly. It's just about right for my sweet tooth needs, and the texture is soft and luxurious enough while still being reasonably firm and chewy too. It's suitable for vegetarians, but not for nut allergy sufferers. And if you're not a big fan of caramel, you're probably best to avoid it as well.
In the time I've written this, the sun has put its hat and has come out to play, so there's no reason not to have another helping of this ice cream today...well there wouldn't be if we hadn't finished it yesterday.
Advantages: Tasty little treats. Nice ice cream Disadvantages: Not many of them in the pot.
...Now, I have had Ben and Jerry's before. I always liken them to an Americanised Hagen Daas. Trying to muscle in on their market. This was no different but did have some unexpected treats for me to try.
Tub.
Yep, it comes in a tub. Similar in appearance to Hagen Daas tubs but different colours.
The Cardboard seems to hold the ice cream together well with no signs of a leaky mess extruding from the bottom.
Even when the ice cream has melted to a ... ...bowl so eat it fast.
Price.
------
Cheaper than the Hagen Daas range. Hagen Daas is nearer £3 while Ben and Jerrys retail at around £2.29 A big saving.
Overall.
--------
A nice ice cream to try. A bit hard in the tub and lacks enough chewy bits. ...
