I have used an awful lot of mascaras over the years, including some pretty terrible ones and some fantastic ones too! I wasn't sure which category this product would fit into as I've had a bit of a hit and miss experience with Benefit in the past, though this mascara looks pretty stylish with it's jazzy packaging so I thought I'd give it a try. I can be quite shallow and judge products on looks far too often and so I often end up with a drawer full of 'pretty rubbish'.
This mascara comes in two different sizes, there is a full size one (8.5g) and a smaller half size one (4g) , they cost around £14.50 and £9.50 respectively. I've got the smaller one, it actually came free with a magazine I bought which was great value as I only paid £2 for the magazine.
The mascara comes in black, plum and blue, and there is also a waterproof version. The colour I had was just the standard black one, I found it a bit odd that it didn't come in brown as that is a popular colour too, certainly more popular than plum I would have thought!
The mascara is contained within a black tube as is normal for mascaras and it also comes inside a cardboard box. I don't generally like make-up products which come with this extra outer packaging as it seems like a waste to me as it's really not necessary! The tube itself is shiny black with pink and white writing along the side. The packaging is pretty cute and probably the best thing about the mascara.
When I pulled the wand out, I was pretty surprised to see how big and thick the brush was. It was huge! It must have taken up nearly all the space in the mascara tube which made me wonder if there was not much mascara liquid in there. . As the wand was so big, I found it pretty hard to control and found that I didn't really get a very good application out of it. As it is such a big brush, there were a lot of gaps between the bristles meaning that you had to go over your lashes a few times to make sure everything was covered. I had to apply it to my lashes in small sections as it was just to big to control and sweep through all my lashes at once. This is not good if you're in a hurry! I found that because it was only a sample size too that the handle was just to small to be able to hold and use comfortably, though this is probably not a problem if you buy the full size mascara.
The actual end result was nothing special in my opinion. The mascara lengthened out my lashes pretty well but they just didn't look very thick which is the look I generally go for! In fact, they looked a little too natural for me so wouldn't recommend using this for a night out. All it really did for was make my lashes black rather than their natural dark brown.. if I was paying the full price for the mascara I would hope for a lot better result for my money! The price is extortionate for what is at best, an average mascara. For that reason, I will only be giving the product 2 stars. I've used far better and cheaper mascaras, one in particular suits me better and I will be sticking to that one. Perhaps the way my lashes turned out after using this is something to do with the way I applied the mascara but the fact that it is hard to apply didn't help!
I used up all the mascara after about two or three weeks, though obviously the full size mascara will last longer. Suffice to say, I won't be replacing it in a hurry.
