After hearing lots of good reports regarding Benefit make up I decided I should see what all the fuss is about so off I went to the Benefit website to read more and to go about ordering my first product which was to be "Hollywood Glo" which is shimmer product to be applied to Cheekbones.
Benefit is the Brain Child of two twin sisters Jane and Jean ford who started out with their first shop in 1976 which was then known as the face place. Both sisters were passionate about beauty products and sold products which at the time were a niche in the American Cosmetics market. Describing a visit to their store like; "A visit to a candy shop." Several years later in 1990 a second shop was bought and after a trip to Italy both decided they would rename the business Benefit, Bene Being the Italian for good.
In 1999 Benefit was recognised by the prestigious LVMH - Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy the purveyors of fine goods. LVMH were keen to acquire Benefit and soon did. This alliance has made Benefit one of the fastest growing Luxury cosmetic brands in the world.
THE PRODUCT
Several days after ordering my package arrived. Within 10 minutes of receiving it I finally won my battle with the Bubble wrap keeping the product secure and was able to see the product for the first time.
The product comes in a pink Cardboard Box. The front of the box has a lady with a bottle of Hollywood Glo in her hand. The box is in the style of make up products back in the 1940's.
Inside the box is a
clear glass bottle containing the glow which also has a picture of a lady on the front, the bottle has a pearly white screw on top.
Hollywood Glo promises to highlight your facial features. The blurb suggests that the soft shade and light reflecting pigments will highlight your facial features and give you a warm sun-kissed sheen.
It also advises that the glow can be worn either on top of your make up or on bare skin to give skin shimmer and luminescence.
Upon opening I decided to pour a small amount onto the back of my hand. Hollywood Glo is extremely runny so it is important not to pour too much.
The liquid is a lovely rose and bronze colour and the shimmer is quite visible and looks almost glittery. It also has quite a distinct smell which is like nothing I have ever smelt before, The best way I can probably describe it is being similar to Coconut.
On applying to my face I made a fatal error by rubbing the product in and not seeing the results I was hoping for. (My face looked a shimmery mess!) so on first application I was quite disappointed with the result. Before my second application I went back to the website and looked up Hollywood Glo, There I found that the trick to application is to pour a small amount on fingertips and pat on face over makeup. It also advises not to rub the product in, apparently rubbing will dilute the shimmer and will not produced the desired look.
For the second application I set about patting and not rubbing. I was pleased to find that the glow dries straight away making it quite suitable for me as I hate taking ages with my makeup!
Once applied properly to my cheeks my face had a lovely bronze glow. It is slightly glittery but I should add that the glitter is very subtle so it is great for everyday wear. The glow can be intensified for evening wear by making a second application. The product has no greasy residue so would be great for all skin types.
THE VERDICT
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone wanting to add a glow to their face. The product is extremely long lasting and I have found that even when applied at 7am in the morning I still have my shimmering glow by 5pm. So thankfully no need to reapply throughout the day.
The only real negative point would be the
price, at £16.50 for a 30ml bottle Hollywood Glo is not cheap. However as only a small amount is needed on each application I would expect the product to last for around six months. Given the predicted longevity of the product to me this represents good value.
This is now one of my firm beauty favourites so I am in no doubt I will shatter my New Years resolution by logging to buy more Benefit products!
