MOON BEAM
If you know BeneFit you will have come to expect of a rather strange name and even stranger packaging – Moon Beam obeys that rule. The outer cardboard box offers no surprises but when you open it you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d picked up the wrong product. Nail varnish? Or at least that’s what it looks like.
It comes in a small cylindrical bottle with a lid in the same style – ie. the brush is attached and that’s what you use for application. The first time I laid eyes on the product inside I must say I was somewhat surprised. It was a golden almost yellow colour and I was convinced I’d made (another) expensive mistake.
So what exactly is it supposed to do? Well, BeneFit inform me ‘This golden apricot perfector illuminates and adds a warm shimmer to your complexion.’ I would have been rather stumped as to how to apply this had I not seen my sister applying High Beam because the only instructions BeneFit offer are, ‘Apply under makeup or wear alone for an overall glow.’
First of all, if they are meaning wear alone as in wear this on the whole of your face I would say, “are you crazy?” If you apply this product with a little amount of light in the room then you’ll wonder where it’s all gone, but if you then stepped into the light to look at it, trust me; you’d know about it.
APPLICATION
As they’ve not offered much assistance I worked this one out for myself. With any bronzing/brightening/highlighting product the bits on your face that you want to highlight are the contours (area below eyebrows to lift them, cheekbones to define, possibly nose etc.) and possibly any areas that you would like to draw some attention to (spread a bit on your cleavage on a night out!) Bearing this in mind I generally go for a minimal approach because with products like this it is best to have too little and layer it on than slap too much on and be trying to remove shimmer from your skin (it never works does it?)
Although BeneFit say apply under makeup I scrapped that advice because I wanted it to be more noticeable. I cleanse my face and apply my usual face care and then tinted moisturiser. I generally apply this straight away because it doesn’t need to sit on top of the moisturiser, it can blend in (same with foundation).
It would depend on what occasion I am wearing this for as to where I would apply it – if it was going out at night then I would go all-out and apply it on my chest, shoulders, under eyebrows and cheekbones. However, I don’t wear this all the time and generally I wear it on days that my face is looking a bit dull/tired. I find it looks really radiant if I apply it around the outer edge of my eye socket and continue it onto the rounded area of my cheekbone.
Despite it being quite a subtle effect that this produces it doesn’t mean you need to apply more to compensate – a small amount does the job perfectly. About three tiny blobs will cover one cheekbone/eye socket.
THE EFFECT
Dazzling. It may seem like a contradiction in terms but this is both subtle AND striking. If you know you’ve applied it then you can see the glow but if someone else looked at your face they wouldn’t see the product, they would see a radiant, healthy complexion. Although it’s a shimmer product there are no particles or glittery bits, it has the consistency of a viscous cream.
You can’t really speak of a ‘colour’ as such for this product but the glow that it produces is very warm – apricot was a good choice of description. I don’t want to put anyone off by saying this but it does have a purple element to it. You can’t see the purple but I think it is what creates the illusion of a warm glow, very similar to Estee Lauder’s Spotlight Skintone Perfector if I remember rightly. I feel this product suits my skin tone perfectly. I am half Chinese so I have a sort of olive skin tone which tans easily. This would definitely suit the skin tones that aren’t best suited to High Beam (probably mainly brunettes). I think this also has the potential to look amazing on black skin, but that’s just guess work!
It sounds really cheesy to say this but when I wear this I sort of feel like this might be one of the makeup artist’s secrets to making celebs look so healthy and attractive all the time (!?)
The effect lasts right up until the last minute before you remove your makeup but surprisingly you can’t feel it on your face because, despite being long lasting, it is truly weightless.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
£15 for 1 15ml bottle from a BeneFit counter, which can be found in larger Boots stores, House of Fraser and a few other major department stores. Alternatively visit their website at www.benefitcosmetics.com
VERDICT
Unlike other cheek products like powdered blusher and some moisturisers this product has not aggravated some pores on my cheeks that easily get blocked and result in spots. This is one of the things that particularly impresses me about this product because some ‘shimmer/highlight’ products are too heavy for my liking.
This is perfect (and you only have to read some of my other BeneFit reviews to realise I’m not being biased towards them). I won’t even complain about the price because it pales into insignificance when you see the effect and the tiny amount that’s used each time.
Advantages: Lovely colour, easy to apply, can be used any time Disadvantages: Expensive, goes off quite quickly
...I know you can get Benefit stuff from most Boots or Debenhams stores. I thought it was a really interesting present and quite unique which is typical of Benefit who are quite an innovative brand always coming up with original ideas. I'm not aware that I had seen any products like it anywhere else when I got it and even now I've not seen many similar things. '''Packaging...'''
The packaging, as with all the Benefit products is gorgeous making it ... ...box with 'moon beam' written on the front in big nice lettering with a gold slash going through it. This is also printed on the top of the box. I don't usually keep boxes to things but I couldn't throw this away. The bottle is equally as cute, it looks just like a bottle of nail varnish and I actually ended up checking the box as to what it is because it looked so much like nail stuff! It is a clear glass bottle so you can see the gold liquid inside. ...

Advantages: adds a subtle shimmer and hint of colour. Disadvantages: pricey-but worth it! :)
...a blusher effect there is Benefit High Beam which instead of the golden glow offers more of a red look.
The old saying 'you get what you pay for' is true here. This may be expensive and an unusual - I don't think there are many similar products out there - but the effect is worth it. Cost - £14.99 Comes in a 13 ml Bottle

BeneFit Moon Beam is a fabulous product. The subtle shimmer illuminates my skin with a beautiful warm glow. It's easy to use and although expensive and you don't need to use too much of it at a time so the product should last for a little while. It's an essential everyday product for the summer. ...

...Then apply blusher, I recommend Benefit Holla Blusher.
** After applying foundation a line under each eyebrow then pat it in with your ring finger for the 'just plucked' look.
** Mix with your facial cream for a natural glowing look.
This is a great product and lasts for ages! A bottle will last around 9 - 12 months. Thanks for reading my review!

Advantages: light belnds well, must have product, well worth the cost. The more subtle the better Disadvantages: Try it out a few times first to get the right application before going out!
Benefit Moon bean can be purchased from most Larger boots stores, where it cost around £16.50. I purchased this item for the first time nearly 5 years ago and now use it everyday.
The bottle is 13ml, and will last for a long time as you only need a small amount for a great effect. The product is a Highlighter liquid, which blends very easily, it is light and smells delicious! (as do all Benefit products) It therefore shouldnt clog you pores.
It ... ...and teamed with Benetint, gives you a glowing effect.
The price is well worth it, as the bottle usually lasts me around 12months, and by this time there is usually soem left in the bottle but i choose to throw it out as do not want any bacteria to breed.
i would recomend anyone to buy this product it is a must have, especially for those days when your just not feeling to well (or a littel hungover) this will help to give you a fresh and dewy look. ...
