...items going into some of Bernard Matthews’s food items, I stopped eating them for a while. But I have recently started using them again – but only a few selected items, one of which is the companies ‘Hamwich’s’.
A lot of people like cheese and ham sandwiches, and at a guess that’s where the original idea came for this ‘meal’: after all, all the product is ham topped with cheese surrounded in breadcrumbs.
Still they are ... ...the wrapper, along with the Bernard Matthew’s logo and pictures of the enclosed product. It’s quite a decorative wrapper, and one that I have no real dislike to. Opening the pack requires scissors – no doubt about that! Cutting along the top will reveal a fairly wide gap allowing you to pick as many or as few of the six enclosed triangles. We usually allow two or three per person – depending on person.
With reports in the news about unwanted items going into some of Bernard Matthews’s food items, I stopped eating them for a while.
Still they are on my list and currently at Iceland you can buy TWO packets (each pack with six Hamwich’s in) for just £3.00, otherwise they are £1.99 each pack.
So getting the packet you’ll note the green colour of the wrapper, along with the Bernard Matthew’s logo and pictures of the enclosed product.
So we got our six triangular Hamwich’s from the pack and placed on a baking sheet and cooked in the oven for about 15 – 20 minutes at 200°c. You can also grill them under a hot grill for 12 minutes: either way you’ll end up with the same taste! You can also shallow fry for six minutes, though we have never done this. As you’d expect during cooking the cheese can reduce down and begin to run out of the sides of the triangles, no great problem though!
First thing I’d say when eating them is that they do get VERY hot, so if giving to children it may be wise to cool them slightly beforehand. Taking a bite gives you the flavours of the main three ingredients combined. None of them are over powering, and each has its place to being the final delicious flavour. The ham is succulent slices of turkey ham, which are actually quite thick; these are layered with cheese and then covered in breadcrumbs. The cheese is neither strong nor overpowering as some cheesy products can be, and simply compliments the non-smoked ham, and add the bread crumbs to make a delicious trio of tastes.
While the cheese might be real, the ham is actually from turkeys, though it tastes the same there is obviously a minute chance of some bones being in the product.
Add a few chips and peas and you have a pleasant enough fairly quick meal! However you wouldn’t have a very healthy meal as each 100g of the triangular bites involves: 260 calories, 15.4g carbohydrates, and 16.6g of fat.
I was actually surprised to find the product includes: sugar AND Glucose syrup not to mention added salt, it also has a few E numbers
All of my family like these, as the combination of flavours is subtle enough to make them enjoyable. They are quick to cook, and should be cooked from frozen not thawed. If you do thaw them, they should never be refrozen, and used straight away. They keep from 3 days in an ice making compartment to 1 month in a freezer. They should also be used by their best by date.

As all my family enjoy these and add the fact they are cheap, and quick I would highly recommend them. The flavour mix well and it isn’t unlike a toasted cheese sandwich that you’d cook at home. The cooking is straight forward and in a way that most people will find easy enough, not to mention very quickly. My Bernard Matthew ban has partly lifted to cover a few products, and this is one of them along with turkey breast roast and some sandwich fillers.
Advantages: Great taste which gets kids to eat turkey Disadvantages: none
Bernard Matthews has been raising turkeys from Norfolk since the 50s when he gave up his job in insurance to become a full time turkey farmer but it wasn't until 1980 that the famous phrase 'bootiful' was seen on the first advertisement for his Turkey Breast Roast. There is now a large selection of his products on shelves in our supermarkets and these include not only frozen but fresh produce too unlike some other manufacturers of meat produce. His ... ...the front and the famous Bernard Matthews logo and house across the top. It also tells us there are 6 portions inside this bag. On the back there is the The Bernard Matthews Gold Seal to mark to guaranteee of quality, taste and value. It also says 'I hope you will enjoy my delicious range of foods, made with over 50 years of expertise and maintaining the best traditions of a family-owned Norfolk business.' A good mission statement there and I have ...

Intro Bit
So... I don't usually buy this type of food, being a more I'll make things from scratch type of guy, however we out shopping at Iceland and a special offer caught my eye: 'Bernard Mathews Cheese Hamwich only £1'. I was wondering just what a cheese hamwich was (which on second thought was quiet obvious)...Upon closer inspection of the picture on the packet I decided to get a pack, after all it's only a pound and anything is worth trying ... ...Cheese Hamwich
To my suprise and delight there were 6 hamwiches in the pack, I had only been expecting about 4, and they were pretty big, bigger than I thought they would be anyway.
A cheese hamwich is basically a piece of 'ham' (sort of tasted like spam I thought) with some cheese on, and this is covered in breadcrums, which go lovely and crispy and if you are lucky some cheese oozes out during cooking and makes the whole thing even more crispy!

Advantages: Taste Disadvantages: Unless Your Eating A Lot Nothing
Just get one, try it, and if you're like me you'll like it.
Probably not the most surprising delicacy in your fridge, but when it comes down to a diet of chips, beans, cheeseburgers, chicken and that week in week out (i know some of you do), well try these, it's worth it at least for the taste.
They're not too pricy and are probably quite hard to find in shops, but I really do recommend getting one.
Iceland are the place that I get them from. ...
