Betterware…………Cold In The Winter……….

I have a confession to make, “I am a sex maniac”. Sorry that’s the wrong confession, “I used to do the Betterware”. I feel better now that I have got that off my chest.

It all came about when my eldest son was 15 and basically looking some part time money so I suggested that he became a Betterware agent and that I would drive him round the area and help him out..

We contacted Betterware and a local manager called out to see us, within a week we were Betterware agents. He supplied us with our books and two shoulder bags for carrying them in. I looked like a complete prat but I didn’t care because we were going to make a fortune, or so I thought…

We were given an area that only we were allowed to throw books out in, I could see us rolling in money, oh happy days. Then I began to think of all those lonely women that I would be meeting when I collected the books in, you read all sorts of things about kinky housewives in the Sunday papers. So a bit of extra money and women as well, let’s get these books delivered son!!.

Now with Betterware you get paid 20p for every pound you sell so I reckoned I would be making a £100 a week easy. Anyway my son and I dropped 100 books out on the Friday night and left a note inside saying we would collect them in on the Monday. It took about an hour dropping them out and another half-hour for me to get my breath back, god that hill was steep and I am not a young or fit man anymore.

Monday has now arrived and my son and I are ready to go and pick up all the big orders, I am really looking forward to it. First 10 houses done and only one order for £6.99, what the hell is wrong here, my plan is not working out. Bound to get better with the next 90 houses, I was wrong. It took us near two hours on a cold dark night to lift all the books in and we collected total orders of about £210. So we made £42 but don’t forget I now had to write the order out and when it came I would have to pack it and deliver it.

When the order arrived about £15 of the order was missing so I was now down to £39 for our work. It took about an hour packing it and counting calling back on people not in about 2 hours delivering. About £5 was wasted in petrol. So £39 less the petrol comes down to £34 for 5 hours work each, so roughly £3.40 an hour each.

So there you have it my friends, a job out in the cold and the dark, getting soaked in the winter. And forget all those thoughts about the lonely housewives, they are not lonely as they have a nasty tongue for company. A lot of people are really ignorant to people calling at their door and some even take the trouble to leave you a nasty little letter telling you what to do with your Betterware catalogue.

I did enjoy doing it and I stuck it out for a few years mainly to teach my kids how to earn money for themselves. A lot of people were very nice and on the whole I found the meeting people bit very interesting. But that’s just me, not everyone would be into that. The money is hopeless and some nights you just don’t want to do it, but sure that’s life isn’t it……
