Betty Crocker is one of the best known and loved manufacturers of fine confectionary. You walk down the baking aisle at your local supermarket and you see that the shelves are lined with this delicious looking brand. They make all sorts, from cake mixes to packets and 'extras'. One thing they make is butter icing, ready for you to spread onto a cake. The flavour I bought for a whopping £1.97 is the chocolate fudge.

I'd heard of people just spooning the icing out of the pot and into their mouth, but was I going to try it myself? I never thought I would, but there was no time like the present!

I was planning on baking a cake, though never did get round to it.I came across this tub in the back of my shelf in the kitchen cupboard, actually forgotten about! I'd not had a chance to taste it, so I decided to give it a try. I'd heard of people just spooning the icing out of the pot and into their mouth, but was I going to try it myself? I spooned some out of the 450g circular tub. It was a rich and dark brown colour, almost a black. Smelling it, it was exceptionally powerful and quite sickly, definitely fudgy. I wasn't too keen on tasting it now, but then I remembered that divine chocolate cake I had a few months back, and how heavenly the butter icing on that one was - there was no reason why this one couldn't taste as good!
Bravely, I popped it into my mouth, wincing. Oh wow.It was exceptionally thick and creamy, very buttery indeed! There was no doubt about it, you could taste that delicious fudge, but it wasn't too overpowering that the chocolate was not detectable. I had a couple of spoons, but that was enough for me! It was far too rich to eat out of the pot, I don't know how people can do it! The sugary sweetness was just too much to handle!
This icing is great for layering on to cakes, and the tub says it can ice up to 36 cupcakes, so it can go quite far for its money. Though one thing the tub doesn't tell you is the nutritional information. I expect this is for the better, as I daresn't begin to imagine how much calories is in even one spoon of the stuff!
This icing is definitely delicious and practical when it comes to baking. It may seem expensive but your money goes far! It's too sweet on its own but perfect for cakes!
Advantages: Amazing taste, easy to apply to baked goods Disadvantages: Rich, top end of price range for icings
...It works best with other Betty Cricket branded products, such as the Devil's Food chocolate cake so that it can be evenly spread over the cake. With this in mind, it is frightfully easy to apply to the sponge... store at room temperature and use a broad spatula to apply, make sure you leave some in the bowl to lick... there is amply content to ice and fill a 22 inch cake top, sides and middle with a decent layer to boot. It is slightly more expensive ...
