Amazing? I Don't Think So
Review of The Amazing Results of Positive Thinking - Norman Vincent Peale by gailmill

Advantages: Entertaining read
Disadvantages: May be disappointed that 'positive thinking' doesn't work for you

...Over the years I have read many books of the art or 'power' of positive thinking and although this type of book is compelling to read and does excite the reader, I don't truly believe that 'anything' can be acheived simply by thinking positively. This particular book supposedly shows readers how to precondition themselves for success and achieve confidence, a sense of well-being, and an inner strength that they never dreamed possible. Sounds wonderful doesn't it! Well fortunately I am a positive person anyway - more the optimist than the pessimist, and I have read a number of Mr Vincent Peales books over the years, however I have never managed to attain the dizzy heights I was led to believe I would simply by concentrating on the positive and ignoring the negative. The trouble is with these kind of texts, that they possibly line one... Read review

Rescuing Rose
Review of Rescuing Rose - Isabel Wolff by Lucyt

Advantages: a light, fluffy easy read
Disadvantages: none really - what you see is what you get

...Having dipped my toe in the Isabel Woolff waters with a previous title, I thought I'd give Rescuing Rose a try ... STORYLINE ****************************************************** Rose is a newspaper agony aunt, but her own personal life is far from plain sailing; her relationship has broken down after her husband slept with their marriage guidance counsellor, and she apparently has a deep secret in her past - something to do with her parents .... She moves to a new house, and ends up living with a lodger called Theo ... therein follows various sub plots involving her friends, twins Bella and Bea; next door neighbour, Bev; and ex boyf called Henry and of course Theo. Obviously, the ex also wanders back into the story and wants her back ... but no! I shan't tell you if she says yes because I don't want to spoil it for you. HAPPY... Read review

Another thirty something book
Review of Turning Thirty - Mike Gayle by aitchison21

Advantages: Bright, breazy, nostalgic
Disadvantages: Soap opera style addiction

...Comments: What is our obsession at the moment with autobiographical style books? Mike Gayle has written another book, which if truth be told is good. However upon refelction it is like a TV soap opera, you get unwittingly sucked in without realising it and before you know it you want to know what happens next, without particularly caring. Having said this, Gayle writes in a breezy chatty way which is easy to read and there are some very funny moments in the book. About the book: Matt beckford has left America and returned to Birmingham to stay with his parents for three months, before going to Australia to work. Whilst in Brummie land he decides to call on all his old friends. As a result a whole wave of nostalgia is washed over Matt as he goes in search of the 'Magnificent Seven' : Gershwin, Pete, Bev, Ginny, Katrina, and Elliot... Read review
