My sister had asked for this game for Christmas because she has a DS and I couldn't wait to give it a go myself. I like games that test your intelligence and give you ways to improve your brain skills - which is exactly what Big Brain Academy does. It doesn't question you on general knowledge like who wants to be a millionaire or the weakest link, instead it trains you in five different categories which are think, memorize, analyze, identify and compute.
When you switch the game on you enter the "homeroom" which is a list of all the players that you have made files for. Creating a new player is very simple and all you have to do is click register and type in a name, but there is a maximum amount of four players allowed. Next to the names there is a grade that you have achieved in the test so that you know who is winning!
When you choose a player you are then directed to the three classes: practice, test or versus. Practice is where you can have a go at the games and win medals according to how well you played, and test is where you put all your skills together to get an overall grade. I have never been on versus before but it is there so that you can compete wirelessly against other players in the same room.
In the practice area you can work on activities at your own pace and win bronze, silver or gold medals. In the middle of the screen there is a pentagon which shows you how well you are doing in each area which is a good and original idea. The corners of the pentagon stretch to the area where you are doing best and don't go as far to the ones that you aren't doing so well in, so you can see clearly what areas need improving. For every activity you have 60 seconds before it's game over. In each category there is an easy, medium and hard level and three games to choose from.
Think
These are logic themed activities which include: A. Heavyweight - There is a picture of some scales and two objects on them, and you have to tap which object is the heaviest. This sounds really easy but on the harder levels they can give you three sets of scales with lots of objects to confuse you, and so you have to say which is the heaviest overall. I found this game fairly easy to begin with but then they give you scales that weigh exactly the same on both pictures, and so it is virtually impossible to decipher which is the heaviest and I usually just end up guessing.
B. Pathfinder - There is an animal at the top of the screen which moves down the lines but has to turn at each corner, and you have to draw an additional line to match it up with the corresponding animal. As the levels get harder more animals are added and more lines to travel down so it takes you longer to work out where it is going to go. I liked this game because if you work it out properly you can't go wrong.
C. Bone Yard - There is directions at the top of the screen to show where the dog has to move and you have to tap on the square that it will end up. Sometimes there are coloured blocks which push the dog so you have to take note of them when you are following the directions. I thought that this game was fairly easy even on the harder levels, but it is one of my favourite activities.
Memorize
These are activities which test your memory skills and they include:
A. Sound Bites - You have to listen to the noises the cartoons make and then copy it when they have finished. Sometimes when I am playing on the DS my mum is watching TV so I can't put the sound on, but the good thing about this is that the characters flash when they make a noise so there is no need to actually listen to them.
B. Flash Memory - This one is really simple and numbers just flash at the top of the screen and you have to remember them. The numbers can be as long as nine characters long though which is just ridiculous when you only get to look at them for a second!
C. Memo-Random - Coloured symbols appear and you click when you have memorized them all, and you just have to know which symbol has disappeared from the sequence. At first there are only two symbols so it is quite obvious, but when it gets harder I memorize the colours because it's easier.
Analyze
These are reason-based activities which include:A. Missing Link - There is a dot-to-dot at the top of the screen with one of the lines highlighted in red, and you have to connect those dots on the bottom image. Most of the time the image is turned upside down or something to make it trickier, and the dot-to-dots can be very complex.
B. Cube Game - There are lots of coloured cubes joined together at the top of the screen and you just have to count them, but some of them may be hidden behind other cubes. This activity takes time because you take ages counting them all, and then you click on the answer and realise you've missed one out!
C. Animal Lines - A sequence appears and there is a grid on the touch screen and you have to find the sequence in the grid, although it could be backwards or diagonal. I liked this activity but you may find that you're staring at the screen for quite some time lol.
Compute
These are all maths activities:
A. Coin-Parison - Two sets of coins appear on the touch screen and you have to click on the larger amount. Sometimes the sets of coins are deceiving because one side may have a load of 10p's and the other loads of 5p's and the one with the 5p's has the bigger total, so on those ones I have to stop and count them properly.
B. Add Agency - You basically have to count the number of objects that appear and then touch two cards at the bottom that equal that amount. For some reason I'm really bad at this game, maybe I'm just too slow! It's a bit like the cube game in the sense that you have to count the objects, but it takes even more time because you then have to find the number bonds as well.
C. Written Math - You have to solve equations which range from 1+1 to ?+9+10=81. I like this because it is sometimes quite challenging and is improving on a useful skill.
Identify
These are visual-themed activities:A. Shadow Shift - There are a few moving silhouettes at the top of the screen and you have to click on the objects that match them. When you get them right the silhouettes reveal themselves to make it easier to identify the others which is a good thing. The shadows even move across the page and spin round to make it more difficult which is quite amusing at times.
B. Get In Shape - There is a shadow and you have to click on the shapes at the bottom that build it. This can be slightly frustrating because the shape may fit into the shadow but it isn't the right one for some reason.
C. Matchmaker - This one is really simple because you just have to find pairs within the grid. The only way they make it harder is by adding more squares to the grid and asking you to find more than one pair.
The Test
Once you have tried all of the activities you can then move on to the test which will give you a grade and tell you what career your brain is most suited for. It also tells you your brain weight which is slightly ridiculous but I suppose it goes with the game title.
The test means just completing one activity from each category to get your scores added up at the end. Once you have started the test you have to keep going but it will only take about 15 minutes anyway. There is a pentagon like in the practice area, and it has a white line to show your average score and a yellow one to show your high score. Once you have completed the test the game tells you what areas you should improve on and what areas you're doing particularly well in.
You can repeat the test as many times as you like and your grade won't fall even if you get a lower score, so you can just keep doing it to get better and better. The highest grade you can get is an A+, I'm currently on B with a supposed brain weight of 1392g and it also tells me I have the brain of an investor (lol).
Versus
I've never been on this before because it requires another DS and another game and we haven't got either. You can compete against up to eight players in the same room which is really good. The way you play the game when you are playing on versus is different to the normal way, and it's all about who gets the answer right first and then the first to reach 300g. It would be fun to play against friends this way and would make it even more competitive!
The graphics in the game are simple yet effective with the character Dr Lobe as the headmaster of the academy. Other graphics include animals like dogs, cats, elephants and lions and other objects like space ships, cars and buses. The good thing about this game is that you don't have to wait ages for anything to load, in fact the longest time I've had to wait is three seconds and that was on the countdown before the activity.
I would say that this game is for people over the age of seven because people younger might not understand it, and adults would enjoy it too. If you are quite a fidgety person or someone that can't stand doing things again and again I wouldn't recommend it to you, but if you like competitive games and ones that challenge the brain then you will enjoy it. I find that once I start playing it I get addicted and won't settle until I've got a gold medal - but maybe that's just me! If you have a competitive streak you might like to compete against other people in your family or with friends because it gives you a lot of motivation to beat their high score!
You can buy this for around £15.00 from places like HMV and Tesco, and it is now available on Wii.
Advantages: Improve on your brain skills, very competative! Disadvantages: MY BRAIN IS NOW GETTING TO BIG FOR THE DOOR!
Well I can honestly say that I have never really been one for games consoles or computer games, probably because I have never been any good at them! I either find a game I can play and get addicted to it for a few weeks then get bored because there’s no challenge or the games is too hard and I don’t have the patience to stick at it and play the first level. I had a Playstation 2 which I got bored with after about 3 months and it just sat there collecting ... ...one. That was until I played on my friends’ game ‘brain training’ on the Nintendo DS and absolutely loved it!
I decided to buy myself a DS out of my catalogue that came with two games. One of them was the brain training game and I played it religiously for a few months, every day, trying to beat my scores. As there is not many games I do like to play I decided to buy a similar game that I had seen on an advert called ‘Brain Academy’.

Advantages: Fun, colourful and motivational. Disadvantages: Just don`t let it take over your life.
...I decided to buy the Big Brain Academy for the Nintendo DS. I tried the game a couple of times and was far from impressed. It struck me as quite childish, more suited to children. My 9 year old son loved it. The characters were of a cartoon varieity and I could not quite take it seriously. How could cartoons help improve your brain? Anyway.......
..............Don`t let first impressions put you off. It is now essential for me to have my daily fix ... ...that I noticed about the game was that it requires that you hold the DS lengthways. This is the other way around to the Brain Training games. The long part of the screen is at the bottom and the other screen above. At first this got on my nerves as I was used to holding it the other way. I soon got used to it though and actually quite like it now. The second thing that caught my attention were the colours. There are lots of colours suggesting that ...

Advantages: Keeps your best score and tests you on different aspects of intelligence. Disadvantages: Not sure how to play it with other ds users yet.
I bought this game about a month after I bought Dr Kawashima's Brain Training. I love both games. While the "Brain Training" graphics make it perhaps more appealing to adults, the "Brain Academy" seems a lot more appealing for children. However this is still a fantastic game for adults. One of the main features I love about the Brain Academy (compared to Brain Training) is that your best score is always saved! This means I am quite happy to test ... ...I don't perform as well as my last test I will not lose my best mark!
When I turned the game on I went to the "Test" straight away to check what my brain was like before any practice! I got D+ (I think D is the lowest grade you can get)! The highest you can achieve is A+, which is proving very difficult to achieve. After practicing I have now reached and become stuck on B- for a while and cannot seem to get any higher. I did stop training for about ...

Advantages: Simple, colourful, amusing Disadvantages: Not much to it
Following successful games such as Brain Training and BigBrainAcademy on the DS, Nintendo obviously realised they were onto a winner with their claims of games that can actually help to improve memory and knowledge. Therefore here's a review of BigBrainAcademy, Nintendo's first attempt at brain training/memory games on the motion sensing Wii.
BigBrainAcademy is an extremely simple game. There's not exactly very much to it and you could easily complete all that the game has to offer within a few minutes. However, the theory behind the game does not involve simply try and completeing the game as fast as possible, but more about continuing to play the games over and overa again in order to try and acheive a higher score.
The main areas of the game are Test and Practice. The Test is quite simple. You take a five part test ...
Advantages: Absolutely wonderful multiplayer for the family. A major party game Disadvantages: Weak singleplayer once you get it down.
Originally released on the DS whilst colliding the
immense popularity of "Brain Age", BigBrainAcademy
for the Nintendo Wii is the same mind game, but now
expanded on for the whole family as well as friends to
join along. Yes, indeed, now you truly can prove that
you are smarter than a college graduate and your
parents aren't smarter than a couple of
grandparents.......hopefully that sounds right. Onto
the review, my fellow classmates.
Idea: BigBrainAcademy introduces the plot that the
bigger brain you have, the smarter you are. Dr. Lobe,
the headmaster of the academy, puts you through
multiple mental questions to challenge your mind's capacity of knowledge and accuracy.
Graphics: Cutesy 2-D animations fill the screen as all characters show off the power of the Wii as much as is possible for this type of game. However ...
Advantages: Fun in short burst, Colourful, Entertaining. Disadvantages: No long term appeal, a term off for gamers.
which doesn?t involve 'Shooting target x' which will make every parent have a sigh of relief.
Its lucky that the game is wonderfully presented using colour and simple low key music as this game is never going to win any awards for outstanding graphics, as the limits of the Wii's graphical power show. Its functional, but is it a blast to play?
Having faith in Nintendo I delve into the main game, anyone who has played the Ds version of this game will know that BigBrainAcademy consists of numerous tests that determine your 'Brain weight'. Heavier being better. This may make some adults cringe as they'll see it's a gimmick however, again, children will lap this up as the fictional character 'Dr Lobe' takes them through their ' Wii Degree'.
There?s no getting away from the fact this is an easy game, for adults they will Whizz through ...
