These words have been etched into my brain for over 25 years. Ever since I was given a poster in 1977. The poster is still on the wall, obviously a different wall to when I first got it as I have moved house several times since then. It is currently residing in my kitchen of all places! You could almost say it is my prized possession., even though I still haven’t managed to frame it yet! ... ...poster? And what has it to do with a book?
The answers are simple. The poster has a poem on it, Bilbo’s last song. It is Bilbo saying Good bye to Middle-earth, which is a very sad thing to do, but with sadness is also the excitement of sailing off to distant lands. And this book is the poem in book form. For those of you that don’t know who Bilbo is, well he is a Hobbit or Halfling created by J.R.R.Tolkien. A children’s fantasy book was written ...

This magical poem is considered by many to be Tolkein's epilogue to his classic work "The Lord Of The Rings". Ship, my ship! I seek the west, And fields and mountains ever blest. Farewell to Middle-earth at last! I see the Star above your mast! The text is a chronicle of Bilbo's musings just before he leaves Middle Earth to take a ship to the Undying Lands at the end of "Lord Of The Rings". Pauline Baynes, Tolkein's favourite illustrator, has realised the text with jewel-like paintings in full colour depicting fabulous scenes from "The Lord Of The Rings" and "The Hobbit". It includes extensive artist's notes and references on the inspiration for the illustrations.
