I've been eating Billy Bear Sliced Sausage for years now, and don't ever intend to give up! Mum started to buy this very yummy meat when me and my brother were very little, to encourage us to eat more, I think, as we were both very fussy eaters when we were small - oh, how times have changed. I couldn't stand meat when I was little and mum tried every which way possible to get me to eat it - then she hit on Billy Bear Sausage Slices and there was no stopping me! I used to love it in my packed lunch sandwiches when I was in primary school and I also liked to eat it with beans and mash for tea.
Now I am 'all grown up', I still love to eat it! It's my nan's fault, really. When she comes to visit us at weekends, she brings us little things, like a few sweets or magazines and occasionally she will bring us really weird and wonderful things, like Billy Bear Sausage. So, she's kind of carried on the 'tradition' and we continue to eat it!
I love to eat it with Cadbury's Instant Smashed Potato with baked beans or tinned spaghetti. Dad says it's full of rubbish, and it may well be, but it certainly tastes very nice, so I'm not going to stop eating it. Nan (and mum) buy it from Tesco from the deli counter, and they usually get about ten slices of it. It's not very expensive, it costs about 99p for ten to twelve slices, which I think is pretty good.
I like to put it inside crusty bread buns with mustard for my packed lunch (and maybe a bit of salad, if I'm feeling 'healthy) now that I'm all grown up and 'sophisticated' - ha! My friends think I'm daft, but I don't care. I love Billy Bear Sliced Sausage because it reminds me of when I was little and growing up. It's a mad-looking product, though. Each slice is made to resemble a teddy bear's head - complete with a manic-looking grin. It's obviously made to appeal to little kids, but I reckon the look on this bear's face would be enough to put many kids off! It's fairly scary!!
It's made from reconstituted pork and turkey meat - about 30% of one, and 30% of the other, with a few odds and ends thrown in. No E's, as far as I am aware and each slice has 32 calories, which, I suppose, is good if you are watching your weight! I also think you can buy this stuff ready-packed in Tesco's. Each pack has five slices of meat in it and costs about 90p. again, it is marketed towards kiddies, as it has a picture of a nice little bear on the packet, munching his/her way through a lovely looking Billy Bear sandwich….yum!
The taste of Billy Bear Sliced Sausage is lovely, I think. It melts in your mouth and has a very 'meaty' taste and I don't think it tastes at all processed, although I know it is. It smells gorgeous and not artificial and again it has a lovely meaty-smelling aroma and makes your mouth water as soon as you pick up a slice. I love to eat it just on its own, too, by the slice, and when I come in late at night I will often have a look in the fridge to see if there is any spare lurking at the back, and stuff a few slices in my mouth at once.
My brother is also still very fond of Billy Bear Slice Sausage, although not as much as I am! He can also be often found raiding the fridge for a couple of slices. It's nice with Branston pickle in sandwiches and also nice to eat with salads, chopped up - although then you obviously lose the 'bear head'.
My brother and me visit our nan at weekends and she will often give us Billy Bear Sliced Sausage on Jacob's Cream Crackers with piccallili - one of her favourites! Nan's not well at the moment, and she will be in hospital for quite a while, we think, so we'll miss her Billy Bear concoctions until she's all better again. In the meantime, I'll continue to eat Billy Bear Sliced Sausage and think of my nan, and wish her all the luck and love in the world……. xx
