I was first introduced to Bio Oil about some years ago. My sister had recommended this product after she had her baby and it had left her with unsightly stretch marks that refused to budge even with recommended stretch mark creams. When I was younger I had a serious accident that left me scarred and being so young I was very conscious about my appearance and refused to show my arms and legs off after the scarring left behind numerous operations.
At the age of 17 I had the world at my feet, I was in my final year at secondary school and was studying hard for my impending exams. As well as revising I had two part time jobs; a couple of evenings a week I worked in our local village shop and at weekends I was in the Territorial Army. I had always wanted to make a career in the forces and this was a great way of getting the experience before jumping into it without knowing much about it. It was while taking part on a weekend gala that I suffered horrific injuries after plunging 25ft from a platform erected for the use of a death slide. The fall resulted in my knee crumbling after landing, and my right arm being fractured in 3 places. I also suffered a hairline fracture in my ankle.
In hospital I endured an 11-hour operation to fuse my knee together with the help of a metal plate, and the same for my arm. Because the surgery was so intrusive, I was left with a large
scar running down the outside of my left leg, which measures about 7” long. The one on my arm was slightly shorter, but still ugly. I had scar tissue also on my hip as I had to have skin grafts so all in all I was in a bit of a mess. Although I had people left, right and centre saying how lucky I was to still have my limbs, it wasn’t much comfort for me at that time.
When I was younger I hated wearing shorts and t-shirts during the summer because I couldn’t handle people staring at me. My parents tried to persuade me to walk with my head high, but I didn’t have it in me so covered myself up. The scars were very evident and people did stare – I think I would have been able to handle it better if people just asked what had happened instead of treating me like a leper.
Anyway, a few years later, I had met a new man, who is now my husband. He knew from the start the extent of my injuries – he had been in the Territorial Army himself, but we had never crossed paths. We met through a mutual friend and the rest is history as they say.
With plans for our wedding going well I was beginning to panic about wearing a short sleeved wedding dress; we were getting married in Cyprus and it was inevitable that I would get a tan thus showing my scars up even more. It was about 6 months before the actual wedding that my sister handed me her bottle of Bio Oil and told me to start using it. It had worked for her so it wouldn’t hurt me to try.
Bio Oil first appeared on the market in 1987 – it has received a lot of press about its healing benefits particularly on scarred skin and was researched extensively over a 20-year period. It contains a long list of vitamins and natural oils which all work together at renewing damaged skin and protecting against the elements that are renowned for aging our skin prematurely.
As well as treating scar tissue, Bio Oil has many other uses; it can be used as an every day facial cream, use it on your hands to give them extra moisture, add a few drops to your bath to give your skin a treat, and eczema sufferers can benefit from this product too as it can be very soothing. My daughter sometimes suffers from dry skin and I find Bio Oil is brilliant at combating the problem.
My main use for Bio Oil though was for the scarring, so did it work? At the beginning I was very dubious about using this treatment. I had used other products that all promised to improve the appearance of scarring and none of them lived up to their claims. Was Bio Oil another one of these products? Because my sister had said it worked for her, I had to give it a go, if she uses something and it doesn’t do what it says on the tin then you can hear her shouting it from the rooftops so half convinced I put it to the test.
Appearance-wise Bio Oil can be likened to Baby Oil, it has the same consistency, is clear like baby oil and it has a pleasant floral flagrance, not too overpowering. Think Rosemary and Lavender mingled together and you’ll get the picture. I learnt pretty early on not to apply too much as a little does go a long way, not just that it does tend to get a bit messy when pouring into your hand.
Apply the oil to the affected skin and gently rub in with your fingers. Your skin will feel glossy for about 5-10 minutes, but slowly the oil will absorb into your skin leaving a protective layer making your skin look healthy and very smooth to the touch. You can reapply the oil throughout the day if you want, and at the start I did apply quite a few layers of Bio Oil to give the scar tissue a boost.
In the early weeks I didn’t notice a huge difference although the redness had faded a little bit. It was about 3 months down the line when I really noticed a big difference. The angry red scar tissue had now lightened considerably and was a pale pink, it was beginning to blend in with my own skin tone and I didn’t feel so bad about exposing my leg during the summer. Ok, the scars were still there, but they were easier to ignore and by the time the wedding was upon us I was too wrapped up in it all to give my scars a second thought.
Years later and I am thrilled with the results, the scar tissue has totally faded and blends in nicely with my skin. The scars are now silvery in appearance, but not obvious enough to make people turn and stare. The scar on my leg, which I was, the most conscious about has faded really well and is only made more visible when I have a sun tan.
I have even used Bio Oil during both my pregnancies and I found it prevented stretch marks appearing, I thought that if people use it afterwards to rid scarring, using it while pregnant might be beneficial, and for me it worked.
Even to this day I have a bottle of Bio Oil in my cupboard, it worked miracles for me and as I am prone to the odd spot or two during the dreaded time of the month, a quick dab of this on my skin and there’s no fear of scarring. Bio Oil is available in most chemists and costs in the region of £10 for a 60ml bottle. However, I buy mine online as it can work out a bit cheaper, but in all honesty it’s money well spent. It gave me back my confidence which is priceless in monetary terms, and a bottle will last ages as a little really does go a long way.
