After upping my training hours in the last few months I have been noticing a few more aches than usual, especially in my legs and shoulders, I have also suffered with shin splints on and off for the last few years and even doing all the stretches after working out I do still get a few niggles in these areas.

I have been searching for a product that would work to ease my muscle pains reasonably quickly so I can keep training, rather than having to take time out to wait for these little niggles to heal, I have tried everything from Ibuprofen tablets to ice packs and most things in between. Aside from regular massage, which sadly in these economic times I can't afford to have every week, nothing seems to work that well.

I was recommended Biofreeze by a personal trainer friend of mine and although it was a little bit expensive at £9.99 from Boots I decided it was worth trying, and I have to admit I am glad I did.

The biofreeze that I am reviewing is the 118ml gel, it's a pain relieving gel that can be used for temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints, arthritis pain, backache, strains and sprains.

Directions for use : Adults and children over 2 years old - Apply to the affected area not more than 3 to 4 times daily. Rub a thin film over desired area of the body, massage not necessary. After use rinse hands with cool water.

Consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, a nursing mother, or have sensitive skin.

The gel itself is an aqua green colour and is very easy to apply, once you remove the lid the first thing you notice about the gel is that it does have a reasonably strong menthol like smell which won't appeal to everyone, but I do have to say this does go away quite quickly once applied. The gel is runny enough to make it easy to apply, but thankfully not too runny so it makes a mess.

My main experience of this gel has been for use on my legs, I applied this to my shins and although the directions say massage isn't necessary I did massage the gel into the area to aid the healing. I have tried it both with and without massage and I do find it works a little better with massage, although it works perfectly well without, it's more of a personal preference.

I found that if I put the gel on last thing at night about fifteen minutes before going to bed this allows the gel time to fully dry, I would also reapply the gel first thing in the morning I have found this is more than enough to really help my shins and in the case of the muscle pains cure any I have had so far.

I keep a gel of this on my desk at work and it has been a life saver for many of the people in the office, with sports related injuries as well as back and shoulder pains from being at a desk all day as well as from lifting heavy boxes.

Biofreeze is also available in different forms such as a spray, roll on and wipes, I can't comment on how well these work as have only used the gel version but I would be happy to try any of the other products after my experience with the biofreeze gel.
