Review of Hitler (1889-1936: Hubris) - Ian Kershaw by SkyscraperFanClub

Advantages: The authoritative work on Hitler.
Disadvantages: A huge book which takes time to read - and this is only the first half.

Ian Kershaw, the historian behind the BBC’s excellent series, ‘The Nazis: A Warning From History’, is also the author of what I feel is the definitive biography of Adolf Hitler. It is fascinating not just in terms of the details it unearths, but also from the point of view that Kershaw has taken a style of writing typically alien to him and made it his own. Modern ‘revisionist’ historical perspectives view history through ...
...previous historians tended to focus on individual people at the centre of importance (e.g. Hitler, Stalin or Napoleon) more modern writings examine the influences around them that shaped history. As the latter is the style adopted by Kershaw, it is surprising that he has chosen to write a biography of Hitler. As Kershaw mentions in the introduction, there is estimated to be over 120,000 works on Hitler, so why is another needed? The existence of ... Read review

The Show Stopper Comes Clean
Review of Heartbreak and Triumph - Shawn Michaels by Andy.mack

Advantages: A very thorough, honest look at his life and career
Disadvantages: Becomes a Little too religious towards the end, but not too much of a bad point

I've been a big fan of WWE wrestling ever since we first got cable TV at home back in the early 90's. Of course my enthusiasm and desire to watch it has lessened over the years I used to watch it every week without fail. Around about the same time Shawn Michaels was really starting to make a name for himself. He was one of the first wrestlers I really started to support, even though he was being portrayed as one of the bad guys, or heels as he refers ...
...his autobiography I decided to borrow it off her and give it a read. I had heard that a couple of the wrestling books in previous years had been pretty good but this was actually the first one I'd gotten round to reading. The book looks at a number of aspects, from Shawn's early life, through his career to date and also how his personal life was going throughout. I also thought that he gave a good insight into how professional wrestling or Sports ... Read review

Hailey's Story
Review of Hailey's Story - Hailey Giblin by Samano42

Advantages: This is what biograhies should be like, very good read and hard to put down, but would read over and over again
Disadvantages: It is a true story, and cried through out most! Shame that it did'nt elaborate on taking Ian Huntley to court.

...was prepared to listen to Hailey's allegations -untill Soham! Hailey's decided to start a fresh, married and is trying to get Ian Huntley to court for what he did to her when she was eleven. I really hope she acheives this as the Justice Sytem could'nt... In light of making money, well i am sure that even if she sold a million copies of this book that would'nt be enough to compensate for what the poor girl experianced. Would definately reccomend. ... Handstands In The Dark - Janey Godley
Review of Handstands in the Dark - Janey Godley by weaholt

Advantages: Fantastically written with a gripping, true story.
Disadvantages: You can't put it down!

Handstands in The Dark is a fantastic book which takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions. You will not be able to put it down!! It became a No 3 best seller, winning numerous awards. Not bad for a first book!! The author of the book is a lady called Janey Godley, who is now a stand up comedienne. She was born in Glasgow in 1961, in the East End, which was quite a run down area. Between the ages of 5 and 13, she and her sister were sexually ...
...in which Janey tells of her fear during these attacks, pulls you as the reader into the room with her, you feel her fear and pain. Plucking up the courage to tell her mother was difficult, but she managed it somehow. The response could not have been predicted and Janey was threatened to keep quiet by her alcoholic mother. Janey was forbidden from telling her father and made to feel as if she was in the wrong. The only friend that she was able to ... Read review

Review of Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography Of Kurt Cobain - Charles Cross by tinac37

Advantages: very well written with interviews with friends and family
Disadvantages: might be seen crying at the end so have tissues at theready.

Heavier then Heaven. From the back of the book, Kurt Cobain's life and death fast became rock 'n' roll legend. The world wide success of his band Nirvana, defined the music scene in the early 1990's and there songs spoke to and for a generation. Music journalist Charles cross a veteran of the Seattle music scene relates this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the Pain that extinguished it. Heavier the Heaven is the definitive life of ...
...geniuses. Ok so after reading the book I wouldn't Agree with the statement on the back cover. My personal opinion of Kurt Cobain changed little after leaning about him, however I'm not here to dictate my music taste I'm here to review this book. The book was written by music journalist Charles Cross who lived near the gun shop were Kurt Cobain bought the Remington shotgun he used to kill him self in 1994. With over 400 interviews to back up his ... Read review
