A tragic historical figure
Review of An Uncommon Woman - Hannah Pakula by
JOHNV
Advantages: Very well-researched, packed with facts
Disadvantages: Too much historical and political detail
This study of the ill-fated Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901), later the German Empress Frederick and mother of Kaiser Bill, is exhaustively researched. The author has had access to some very useful sources, and this is bound to remain the most complete book on the Empress for some time to come. I particularly like her sympathetic tone; 'Vicky' has had her detractors, who have accused her of being tactless, domineering towards her husband, and ... ...her life, but Pakula proves that these judgments show a distortion of the evidence, or else stem from a lack of understanding and insight.
The main problem with this book is that its 600 pages or so of closely-printed text often tend to lose the central character from time to time. There is considerable detail about the court of Berlin and the various wars, political issues of the time et al, but I think it would be much more readable if some of ...

Hailey's Story
Review of Hailey's Story - Hailey Giblin by
Samano42
Advantages: This is what biograhies should be like, very good read and hard to put down, but would read over and over again
Disadvantages: It is a true story, and cried through out most! Shame that it did'nt elaborate on taking Ian Huntley to court.
...was prepared to listen to Hailey's allegations -untill Soham! Hailey's decided to start a fresh, married and is trying to get Ian Huntley to court for what he did to her when she was eleven. I really hope she acheives this as the Justice Sytem could'nt...
In light of making money, well i am sure that even if she sold a million copies of this book that would'nt be enough to compensate for what the poor girl experianced. Would definately reccomend. ...

'I told you I was ill.' on his headstone
Review of Spike Milligan - Humphrey Carpenter by
britum2000
Advantages: A biased account of the life of this Irish comic genius and lunatic!
Disadvantages: Perhaps too revealing and not to everyone's taste.
...I am keenly aware that Spike Milligan may not appeal to everyone as an icon of British comedy. I only became interested in him through his improbable wartime memoirs, his various books of comic verse and his insane novels, Puckoon and the Looney. My curiosity was heightened by his TV appearances on talk shows in his later years, here it appeared was a true eccentric with a genuine twinkle in his eye.
Then when Humphrey Carpenter produced a biography ... ...and other English stalwarts.
Spike (Terence Alan) Milligan KBE was born in Ahmednegar, India on the 16th April 1918, the son of Irish born Leo Milligan, an officer in the British Army. Apparently Leo was quite a colourful character who often dressed up as a cowboy and did stunts on horseback. Milligan came to England with his family when he was 13 and remained here for the rest of his life.
Spike Milligan has a rightful place in any history of ...

An amazing man, an amazing story
Review of On The Edge - Richard Hammond by
miasmum82
Advantages: Fantastic writing, amazing story
Disadvantages: You will probably cry (I did!)
...we would ever see him on tv again, would he be the same person?
The first television appearance was on Jonathan Ross, and I tuned in eagerly, to see if the Hamster we all loved was still there. It seemed yes he was, apart from a new love for celery, and an uncanny ability to recall everyone's phone number! What relief. During this time we had been watching the media storm against the BBC and more specifically Top Gear, claims it was dangerous, it ... ...I had found Hammonds interview on Ross fascinating.
Being stingy however, I waited until I could pick it up at two books for £7 in the supermarket! (In all fairness, it's only now Mia's reaching one that I get chance to read anyway!).
To be honest, I didn't expect a talented writer when I thought of Hammond, which in hindsight, was silly, he is a journalist after all. I was shocked by the unique and direct writing style he used. Somehow, there ...
