Review of Stiff Little Fingers, Song by Song - Jake Burns, Alan Parker by
matsu65
Advantages: A great read
Disadvantages: I could've kept reading another 100 pages
Stiff Little Fingers were one of the most commercially successful punk bands of the late 70's and early 80's. Formed in Belfast in 1977, they were often wrongly accused of cashing in on the troubles in Northern Ireland. Nothing could be further from the truth, their songs were simply about the things they new best, the army on their streets, the paramilitary organisations influence over communities, and above all, being a teenager in a city where ... ...and went "Jesus Christ, Mr Stiff Little Fingers" And I thought "F*** me, Phil Lynott knows who I am'
This is a book not just for the loyal SLF fan, or for people who just have a fond memory of them. It's so well written, funny and entertaining I believe anyone would find it an enjoyable read…Go For It!

'Shame' - An Outstanding Story By A Brave Woman
Review of Shame - Jasvinder Sanghera by
carysb
Advantages: A Learning Curve
Disadvantages: The Topic Should Never Exist To Need Writing About
My Synopsis
'Shame' is an honest account of a woman who grew up in an Asian community ruled by the gossip of the Gurdwara in Derby. This book outlines the pressures and restrictions of being a girl brought up by strict Sikh values in a community where 'Shame' and 'Dishonour' is the ultimate betrayal and leads to being shunned and disowned by the entire family and local community.

crazibaby
Advantages: Great book !
Disadvantages: na
I dont even know if this will reach Jenny Tomlin but I am hoping that she someone will read this
I am very touched and feel like I have been touched by an Angel after reading this book. Jenny you are an amazing lady, you are so strong willed and I think that your endurance has paid off.
I have found a way to a better life after reading your book. I would have to say this is the best written book I have ever read. Your Sister Kim is also a strong ... ...reading the horrible parts of your childhood and how it all continued into adulthood.
I am amazed that you never gave up hope, after so many dead ends, you stayed strong and grasped on to hope.
I am a struggling single mother,at 22 and trying to make the best life for me and my son. I had him at 18 and although I was upset that his father refused to meet him, and probably never will, my views have changed after reading your book, and I now think ...

Running Deep
Review of Still Waters - Jennifer Lauck by
hiker
Advantages: Captivating - surprisingly warm, humourous and uplifting
Disadvantages: None
...who, like me, come to Still Waters cold, it doesn't take long to realise that just prior to this trip to Reno 12-year-old Jenni was pretty much living rough on the streets of California having been virtually abandoned by her stepmother, following her father's death. Arriving at the trailer home of her grandparents in Reno, it seems that life is finally going to improve. But the days of TV and the cocktail hour and simple domesticity are to be short-lived ... ...more in that line, but Still Waters is so far removed from it that I'm tempted to go back and find out.
Why doesn't Still Waters qualify for the genre? Mainly because it simply isn't miserable. Lauck doesn't seem to even try to elicit our sympathy. She manages to tell her life quite simply. It hasn't been the best or easiest of lives it's true - but also it isn't the most traumatic or poverty-ridden of existences either. In some ways her experiences, ...
