Karina
Review of Karina has Down Syndrome - Cheryl Rogers, Gun Dolva by
bluejules
Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *
...book describes the developmental stages Karina reaches. As these are later than a typical child, I felt really pleased when she reached them. I felt as though someone was telling me about a child I knew, and I felt almost as emotional about it. There is also information about the professional help that Karina received in the early years of her life. I think this will be helpful to new parents of a child with special needs. There are contact details ... ...helpful to British parents)
Karina has an older sister and a younger brother and I enjoyed reading about the family as a whole even though the book is focused mainly on Karina. It was nice to read how the family coped and I enjoyed reading about things they did together.
~ What did I think and would I recommend it? ~
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was nicely written and I was interested in learning about the development of this lovely ...

Is cooking really the new rock'n'roll?
Review of Kitchen Confidential - Anthony Bourdain by
fizzytom
Advantages: Funny, incisive and refreshingly honest
Disadvantages: Might put some people off eating out
A couple of years ago we were told that cooking was the new rock'n'roll. If Anthony Bourdain is to be believed, it's the new punk - it's in your face, sharp as a Sabatier knife and it makes no apologies. "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly" is a rollercoaster ride through his career from the lowly days as dishwasher in Provincetown, Cape Cod to the rocky heights of the Rockerfeller Centre's world famous "Rainbow Room". It's ... ...and back to New York again, manage restaurants where he is responsible for everything from the hiring and firing of the waiting staff to creating every dish on the menu.
Bourdain is refreshingly honest. His story is told almost warts and all (he can't spill all the beans - there are some people who are just too dangerous to risk angering) and he offers some expert advice for anyone thinking it's a profession they might like to try. He engages the ...

Coleen McLoughlin: Welcome to my world
Review of Welcome to My World - Coleen McLoughlin by
louiseyd
Advantages: Cheap, fun and easy to read
Disadvantages: I want her life
I bought this book on a spur of the moment shopping trip, basically because I was interested to see how Coleen went from being a schoolgirl to a WAG in such a short space of time. I was amazed to read her story and see how down to earth she really was, even after being catapulted at amazing speed into the limelight.
She was even thoughtful enough to come back to her book and update it with her wedding plans for the release of the paperback edition. ... ...quick life update, within which she includes girly pages with tips on make-up, fashion, nights out and quizzes, making it so much more like a diary. It is really easy to read and highly enjoyable to learn how down to earth she is and how she enjoys nothing more than snuggling on her sofa watching the soaps just like the rest of us. ...

Little girl lost.... then found!
Review of Little Girl Lost - Barbie Probert-Wright & Jean Ritchie by
sarahbarrow
Advantages: Shows a reverse perspective.
Disadvantages: Heartbreaking at times.
...six, makes this sometimes a little difficult to read and comprehend. ( I have a six year old daughter and the idea of her seeing the atrocities that the author did is heartbreaking to me).
Amongst all the fear, desperation, hunger and complete and utter exhaustion is the story of the true hero's of this book……. The people.
The true humanitarian feeling you get throughout the entire book is astounding, the people who have nothing and nowhere to ... ...a stranger, the people who fear for their homes due to the "invasion" of the English and like, who at a moments notice, will have someone "billeted" to them, ( this is what they called the refugees, after they were allocated a bed or home in the village they happen to come across) and show the refugees unforgettable kindness by providing a warm bed for the night and a delicious meal to boot.
This book is full of sadness, and the stories of the complete ...
