Uncomfortable Memories of an Uncompromising Father
Review of In My Father's House - Miranda Seymour by
suesie
Advantages: A beautifully grafted story which makes for a riveting read
Disadvantages: It ends too soon
...at their home, Thrumpton Hall in Nottinghamshire. His obsessive love of this 400 year old, rose brick, mansion came to dominate his life. Even at seven , in a school essay, he wrote, “When I am the squire of Thrumpton Hall, I shall look after my people and I shall preach to them on Sundays” and this desire never left him.
The author is at pains to discover the roots of and reasons for this house becoming her father’s ‘raison d’etre’. Maybe it was ... ...career and job in banking This is accounted for by the fact he was “ an insufferable little prig” ridiculously spoilt and indulged by his mother, father and aunt alike. Maybe his loneliness and frequent isolation from his mother and father made him regard the house as a security blanket.
More likely it grew from his own pretentious nature. From his very early years, he demonstrated all the attributes of a sanctimonious snob. He never failed to mention ...

good reading!
Review of Who Does She Think She Is? - Martine McCutcheon by
little_miss_sunshine1982
Advantages: good reading
Disadvantages: none
While clearing some stuff out recently, I came accross this book. I first read it a number of years ago whne it was first realeased and decided to have another read.
I don't know why I originally decided to read this book, as I am not particularly a huge fan of Martine McCutcheon, but I am glad I did. Admittidly she is quite young to write an autobiography, so you would think that she doesn't really have much experience on lif or her career at the ... ...is written in such a way that you culd actually imagine Martine speaking and telling you her story, she is so down to earth and it gives you some insight into her life form growing up as a child to the present day. There are also a number of photos included from various points in her life. Martine tells the story from when she was born. She was born into one of the least promising backgrounds and spent most of her childhood with her mum on the run ...

Fascinating Insight.
Review of The Duchess of Kent - The Troubled Life of Katharine Worsley - Mary Riddell by
flopsy
Advantages: Well-researched and analytical.
Disadvantages: At over 400 pages some people might find it rather long.
"The Duchess of Kent The Troubled Life of Katharine Worsley" by Mary Riddell is a fascinating indepth analysis of the life of the present Duchess of Kent. The author analyses the forces which shaped the character of the young Katharine from her privileged upbringing in Yorkshire to her unhappy marriage overshadowed first by the domineering presence of her mother-in-law Princess Marina, then darkened by the stillbirth of her last child, mental breakdown ... ...of the book deals with the Duchess's conversion to the Catholic faith and the effect this had on her life, both personal and public. Also the author examines her relationships with members of the Royal Family and draws parallels between this and the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. I found it an insightful read. ...

Memoirs of a Mistress
Review of Memoirs of a Mistress - Mistress Lorna by
askamsandrat
Advantages: honest life story. funny and also touching.
Disadvantages: none if you have an open mind.
Well I think I need to start this review with a little explanation. My friend Lorna is a professional mistress!! I have known Lorna from our days at school but only got in touch again when she emailed me after seeing I was on my old school directory on My Space. I used to live next door to Lornas first husband and remember she was just a little on the wild side then!! Since getting in touch we haven't met but swap regular "did you hear about……" emails. ... ...to justify why I feel the need to right a review on Lornas first book detailing her life from school to present day. Now im really not sure how this review will go down on here but to be honest if you are still reading after seeing the book title then you really should be open minded enough to not judge this book by its cover. There are many opinions on right and wrong and it really would be a dull world if we were all the same. The book is a paper ...

One Man's True Story Against The IRA!
Review of Fifty Dead Men Walking - Martin McGartland by
herby30
Advantages: Thrilling
Disadvantages: Terrifying
...where fighting was commonplace.
Fifty Dead Men Walking is the best selling autobiography that tells us his story of behind the scenes at both the IRA and the Special Branch, working as Agent Carol, it is estimated that he has saved over fifty lives (hence the title of the book), most of whom would never know the risks he has taken to save them, but he shares it all with us and it truly is a fascinating read.
As a child Marty witnessed much brutality, ... ...see in our lifetimes, not just at the hands of the IRA but also at the hands of the Armed Forces, but as an adult he witnessed far more than imaginable.
Like many any young boys from working class families, he ends up wheeling and dealing in many illegal money making schemes never seeming to gain any reputable full time employment always managing to avoid the IRA Policing Squad, many would report crimes to the IRA rather than the local authorities ...
