A Compelling Story
Review of Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela by ICATJAM

Advantages: Informative
Disadvantages: Inexperienced readers may find it long and linguistically difficult

At last I found the quality time in my life to read the story of this living legend. The story of just a man but a man with the strongest convictions of any man in history. A man who lived through his imprisonment to see his dream begin. I say begin because as we know there are still many injustices in his country which are not yet ironed out. Mnay things have been said in previous reveiws and I shall not attempt to repeat them. i only say that this ... Read review

Sir Humphrey tells it like it is
Review of Straight Face - Nigel Hawthorne by JOHNV

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: none

To me, Sir Nigel Hawthorne always came across as an unassuming, even self-deprecating, thoroughly decent man, without a trace of pretension. He was also one of my favourite actors of the last twenty years or so. And I’m happy to say that this memoir, written while he was fighting the cancer which killed him, does nothing to counteract that picture of an extremely likeable person. Born in England in 1929, he and the family emigrated to South ...
...bug during his schooldays, he realised that the only way he could further his ambitions of making it his career was to make the journey home again. After years of struggling with minor roles, occasionally on TV but mainly on the stage, he landed the role of Sir Humphrey Appleby in ‘Yes Minister’ and ‘Yes Prime Minister’, and the title role in ‘The madness of King George’, and from then on he never looked back. ... A complex man
Review of Bruce Chatwin - Nicholas Shakespeare by sfinchuk

Advantages: Brilliant portrait, detailed, sympathetic but honest
Disadvantages: Can be heavygoing in places

Bruce Chatwin was one of the UK's most extraordinary writers of the post-war years and, as the reviewers of this biography have stated, he was also something of an enigma. He had worked as an art expert and studied archaeology before turning his hand to journalism and both fiction and non-fiction works - like In Patagonia and The Songlines. But his books defied description - the lazy would call it travel writing but Chatwin was keen to explore much ...
...and humans as nomads for example. Shakespeare's wonderful biography paints a picture of a complex man, at times likeable and at others truly monstrous to his wife, friends and colleagues alike. He married but mostly had sex with men and was one of the UK's first high-profile AIDS casualties. He could be remarkably generous and at other times rude and selfish. Shakespeare's book paints a fascinating picture and tries to get under the skin of his subject. ... Read review

What a real Role Model should be
Review of Black, White and Gold - Kelly Holmes by sewbizzie

Advantages: Great inspirational reading
Disadvantages: Bit long winded when she laks about other race competitors

Black White and Gold is the biography written by 2 times Olympic champion, Dame Kelly Holmes. She starts the book in March of 2005 as she is sitting in a limousine driving towards the gate of Buckingham Palace. She is off to receive her Damehood and she says how surreal it felt and how she had to pinch herself to make sure it was really happening. She tells how she joked with the other people who were also their receiving their Damehood and Knights', ...
...to have the Queen place the sword on each of her shoulders, she tells them all she is going to kneel down anyway! As we all know she did not and she received her dame hood in the correct way! We are then taken back to her early years and she tells how when her parents found out she was pregnant and had split up from her boyfriend they did not want her to have the baby but she went ahead and when Kelly was born her mother was given the choice of ...
